I noticed that as of R5A15.1, mplayer 1.0pre6-3.3.5 does not seem to support changing the audio track of a DVD on the fly. I noticed this when, after upgrading from R5A12 to R5A15.1, some DVDs that played fine under R5A12 were now defaulting to commentary tracks.

"There's got to be a key to change that. Nope. Nope. Nope. .... nope....nope...hmm, maybe capital keys....nope, nope...nope..." etc.

I think I've fixed the problem by changing the mplayer invocation (via the Playback setup for DVDs) by adding " -alang en" at the end.

This might just be an upgrade-related issue (e.g. new installs might have something similar applied to the invocation line).

Back to my main point: it appears that the more current mplayer 1.0pre7 added a key in the UI ("#") for changing the autio track on the fly. Upgrading KnoppMyth to use this version might be useful, if they're considered stable (or at least as stable as the current version).

On the bright side, the DVD was playing commentary by the effects guys. That was pretty cool!

I had issues compiling the latest MPlayer, that is why it hasn't been included. Last I assuming everyone that uses KnoppMyth wants English as the default playback language?

Hmm, good point...it was silly of me to assume '-alang en' might have been or should be part of the R5A15.1 defaults. It's a good workaround for my situation though.

I'm not sure what changed between R5A12 and R5A15.1 (via upgrade), but at least one DVD was now playing a different audio track after I did that upgrade. If mplayer hadn't changed, I'm not sure why that is.

I'd thought about trying to apt-get install mplayer, thinking perhaps that might bring me up to 1.0pre7 but I fear the side effects.

On a similar topic, libdts should be considered for future releases. With some DVDs mplayer defaults to a DTS track which it can't decode and you get a buzzing noise. (This probably doesn't happen if you use SPDIF, the console seems to indicate it switches to pass-through which may explain the buzzing  )

I did the apt-get install mplayer on my old R4V4 install and ended-up screwing up a bunch of stuff. I recently installed 1.0pre7 from source on my R5A15.1 install and it works just fine.

I should have logged the process I used (commandline, order of things, etc.) because I think writing a nice HOWTO in the Usage/Howto section would have been nice. It's pretty straight forward, even for someone like me with very limited LINUX knowledge. I have most of the steps documented in this thread if anyone cares.

If you're willing to try the apt-get route, please let us know how it goes.
