Hi guys. I have a Epia MII motherboard with onboard TV-out and a PVR 350 which also has tv-out. Which of these do you recommend I use - which is the best quality?
While I've been setting up my Knoppmyth box it's been connected to a monitor. Ideally I'll like to arrange things so that I can enable tv out but monitor output will still function. If anyone could give me some hints on how to set up my XF86 Config file that would be much appreciated. I've looked on the Wiki but it looks like most of what's on there is for older versions of Knoppmyth.

the epia tvout will most likely be much easier to setup and I don't have one and haven't heard any comment on the quality of their tvout. The PVR350 is supposed to have the best tvout (outside of hdtv component/vga/dvi) anywhere, but is a royal PITA to set up.

Is this enoough for me to connect the tv-out to my TV? I don't want to risk blowing anything up by trying to drive the tv with too hig a resolution. I'm in the Uk BTW, so my TV is Pal-I

I would probalby remove the 1024x768, though if it won't work it will probably get removed for you.
The most important part if you are worried about "blowing up" the tv is to make sure that your vertical refresh in the XF86Config-4 file is set to 60
Also you'll want to make sure you are using the right driver. I'm not possitive, but I believe the driver for the epia is now called via. Also since your recordings will be from a pvr card you might want to go through the settings and check the via xvmc setting to get the mpeg2 hardware acceleration going. I think xvmc works ok on the epia boards.

I'm having problems getting this working. I've made the changes to my XF86Config-4 yet the output still goes to the monitor. I've set the video output in my BIOS to be TV+CRT - when it boots, the startup info is displayed on the TV screen fine, and yet when X starts, the output is pushed to the monitor. This even happens when the monitor is not connected. I think I'm missing something, does anyone have any suggestions?

what type of connection are you using to the tv, if you are using composite (looks like an audio rca cable ) or a svideo rca converter on either end then you need to specify composite instead of svideo in the XFConfig-4 file.

The TV-out on the motherboard is s-video, this is going to a SCART socket to the tv via what looks like a composite connector (this might well be an s-video RCA converter). I'll give it a go on composite and see if it makes any difference.

well it really has little to do with color depth. a svideo connector breaks out color and b/w whereas a composite doesn't, so often times if you try to send a svideo signal through a converter what you end up with is just the b/w portion. This is of course a very simplified description, but explains why the problem happens, though for most people here using a converter specifying composite has fixed it up, though that's usually on a nvidia card. not sure if things are different on the epia tvout.

well what you are seeing quoted on the forum/wiki are the options for the nvidia drivers, and if you are looking for the correct syntax you can consult the readme file on the nvidia site. However if you are looking for any other driver than the binary official nvidia drivers these options are most likely useless, and you will need to go find out what the options for your particular driver are. I know some are listed for the sis drivers on one post here, but I'm not sure I've ever seen the proper options list for epia.

Thanks. I've had a Google about, but I couldn't find the full options list for the Via driver. After a fair bit of trial and error I managed to get the display to turn green - which I've read about on the forum. So I disabled DPMS and it worked!

I've uncovered another problem guys, this is a really strange one. With my default XF86Config-4 file, the live TV works fine (on the monitor), yet when I switch to the version above and view on my TV and go to view live TV, I get the message "Unable to initialize video" with an option to "return to menu"
It's wierd that changing the XF86Config-4 file would cause this to happen. I don't really understand why. Any ideas?
