I, and my wife, were getting pretty frustrated with A12. I really should not have installed that one. :-) I have not had the time to jump back to a R4 install like I should have done. Yesterday I took some time to upgrade to 15.1. (But had a R4 disk handy) In the last year of using knoppmyth this has been the smoothest change since day one. Thank you for a great system.

My only hiccup has been the xbox front-ends. The problem with myth is no backwards compatibility between releases. All front-ends need to be upgraded with the back-end, but I have yet to find compatible .18 debs to upgrade the xbox distribution. O well, in time, and hopfully my wife won't want to watch tv in any other room. I haven't told here they don't work yet.

I'm in exactly the same boat. I have 3 or 4 xboxs that are just sitting around doing nothing since I don't have 18.1 on them. :( If you run across a way to load it please post and shoot me a PM.

Thanks!

The xbox debs are up. They have been for a while now. Just follow the directions you used to install it the first time around.
Code:
cd /tmp
wget http://bit.blkbk.com/mythtv-xbox.0.4.5-beta.tar.gz
tar xpzvf mythtv-xbox.0.4.5-beta.tar.gz
./install.pl -c

Go through the prompts and when done test with:
Code:
./install.pl -t

Reboot... All done: xbox frontends working.

I didn't see any updates on his page so I assumed they were still the old R4V5 debs yet. I'll start loading tonight. :) Do you know offhand which version of Xebian they work with? I think all my xboxs are on 1.0.x. Last time I checked 1.1.0 was current, but it looks like 1.1.3 is out now.

Thanks!

Honestly, I don't remember what version of xebian. I beleive it is 1.1, but all I did was do the ./install.pl -b first, then the other part when I upgraded to the first R5 release. I don't even know if this was needed, I think I did it out of not know what in hell I was doing. :-)

The updated debs are not on his site. Check /etc/apt/sources.list for the correct location of the myth debs. I am not home right now to check, but that is where you find it. The blkbk.com site just has the scripts to make the install VERY easy, by doing all the work for you.

I tried 1.1.3 first but the MythTV install failed saying it needed 1.1.0. After I threw 1.1.0 on the install took. :) There were some errors during the install, but it worked in the end.

Thanks much!

Is it just me or does it seem like there is a lot more overhead now on 18.1? The xbox works, but it pauses once and awhile on live TV. Is there anything in Xebian 1.10 that I can turn off to improve speed (like Fluxbox maybe)?

Thanks,
Gonz

I don't want to harp on the 18.1 issues. In fact I have until now, not posted anything about my experiences with it. I have noticed a few other posts regarding 18.1 and overhead, but have not had the time to follow up much. I agree, 18.1 has had a horrible increase in performance overhead. I have not taken the time to find out why in my case, but it is VERY noticeable. So much so, that I do not use the XBox frontends right now, and have rotated my master backend hardware to a small case and use it as the remote front end. My big fast AMD XP 3000 box hardware is now in my master back/front end. Since I completely use Macs now for other work, this HW wasn't being used anyway. With the XP2600 I was seeing CPU usage increase of nearly 30% just after the auto upgrade. I have spent some time working on cooling and quieting my main system. I sort of wish I did not upgrade. But many advantages of the 18.1 have made it almost balance out.

One thing you could try, increase the mplayer cache, this may help the stuttering. Use NFS instead of SAMBA. Use a wired network if you can rather than wireless. Other than that, you could just go back a version.

Here are the top 3 in the list while watching live TV:

Code:
PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S %CPU %MEM    TIME+  COMMAND
 1775 root      16   0 41464  34m  21m R 43.1 61.4   3:00.73 mythfrontend
 1642 root       6 -10 51624  15m  11m S  7.2 27.9   0:38.95 XFree86
 1776 root       9   0 41464  34m  21m S  3.0 61.4   0:16.43 mythfrontend

Increasing the mplayer cache to 1.5 meg seems to have helped though. I'd still like to get a few cpu cycles back if possible, but if I can't I think it's now in a usable state.

Thanks,
Gonz
