"Motion is a software motion detector. It grabs images from video4linux devices and/or from webcams (such as the axis network cameras). Motion is the perfect tool for keeping an eye on your property keeping only those images that are interesting."

Motion is included in R4. You can find a sample confiugration file in /home/mythtv/.motion/motion.conf. I use a webcam(Logitech Quickcam Zoom) w/ my boxen. To find a webcam(if that is want you want to use) that works w/ Linux:http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdevcat.php?id=9 Motion will create MPEGs and place them in /myth/video/motion. To view the created MPEGs: Videos -> Video Manager(this will reread /myth/video and search for new videos), exit Video Manager -> Browse Videos. To start Motion when X starts vi /home/mythtv/.fvwm/.fvwm2rc and remove the comment in front of exec motion:
Before
#exec motion
After
exec motion

To start and stop at anytime:
Motion -> Start Motion or Motion -> Stop Motion
You can also view live captures at http://<ip.of.knopp.myth>:8081/motion.html. You'll need to edit the URL in /var/www/motion.html.

I highly recommend that a look at the Motion Guide:

Is motion no longer included? I'd especially like to have the sample motion.conf

TIA :D

Yes, Motion has been removed. I'm going to use another program instead, watch for it in a future release.

Would you mind elaborating? Is there a problem with motion, or something much better? I'm a newbie, but if there's anything I could do to help, I'd love to try.

I didn't deem it use friendly enough. You can always install it from source if you wish...

Current thoughts on the Quickcam Zoom? Or does anybody have a recommendation for another decent webcam for linux? I'd like to get one so I can peek in on the kids when I'm on the road and call home to say goodnight. Indoors at bedtime is a little dark, so I'd like to get one with decent performance in low/medium light. I'm still on R5 Alpha 10, but I may want to plug this in to a FC3 or ubuntu machine.
