When following the wiki I have this problem:
(booted with cd for frontend)
I try to comment out the skip-networking line in the etc/mysql/my.cnf file and it is read-only. I.E. if using xedit it says read only in the dialog box, or if i try to edit with nano, it seems to output to my.cnf, but when looking at the file the line is not commented out.
If I boot without the cd, the line stays commented out and I can get weather and net stuff.
Boot again with the cd and I am back to here.
(thought I posted this earlier in the installation section as I am trying to install this.}
UPDATE: Thought the cd was the front end entity. do not use cd after auto-install except for separate front ends on a multibox system.

Installation is only for problems with the installation onto a hard drive from CD. Anything after that is post-installation, and what you're describing is after that.
The wiki's FrontEndOnly article clearly states: "First of all, this will do you no good if you do not have a working backend box." The same is true with booting from the CD as a remote frontend. Do you have a working backend box?
If so, then you need to edit that my.cnf document on the backend, not the frontend. It sounds like you're trying to edit the file on the frontend while booted from the CD, which obviously won't work.

I thought that 1. Do the autoinstall from the cdrom
2. Make changes to files such as my.cnf.
3. Reboot and run off the cd as a frontend. I was thinking this could be done in the same box, do I need 2 boxes?
If so I hope my pchdtv card will reside in the frontend box, If not the wife will make me go out and buy a new hdtv 50" with a hdtv tuner.
I previously had it recording and viewing at same time with FC3 install and running multiple mplayer windows etc. I was hoping the myth system did it all in one.
Thanks

When you run autoinstall, it installs the frontend AND the backend on the same machine. That can be your single machine for recording stuff (backend) and viewing stuff (frontend).
The instructions on the wiki are for setting up a second computer that is only a frontend, with the backend still handling all the recording stuff.

At this point, it might be useful for you to provide a description of your setup.
In particular, do you have more than one box with mythtv installed?
Are you talking about a single PC that you did the autoinstall and then booted from the CD using option 1 for the frontend only?
From some of your other posts, I think I might know what the problem is, but you need to answer the above questions, so I don't waste my time explaining it if I am wrong.

Aria SFF case
Albatron FX-5200 128m dvi/s/composite (has noisy fan, not heatsink as advertised)
Intell 865xxx MB w/ 2.4P4 and 533 FSB
WD1600 160G ide on master ch1
cheap cd-rw on master ch2
PCHDTV hd-3000720M ddram
indoor log periodic antenna, I am close to stations...
Thanks for help, I was planning for now to have the small box in the living room until a mature setup (me or box) was found, then would think of multiple boxes later.
So how do I run this whole box-in-one? and remember I have that skip-network edit question..

O.K. just as one final confirmation, you are only working with one computer right?
If so, after doing the "autoinstall", you can take the CD and beat yourself over the head with it until you get polycarbonate shards stuck in your scalp, because you don't need it anymore!
I repeat, once you do the autoinstall on computer #1, DO NOT BOOT FROM THE CD ANYMORE on computer #1.
Booting from the CD using the frontend only option should be done on another PC. It is just a neat option to allow you to run a frontend without installing the OS to the hard drive. When you are running a CD frontend, you won't be able to edit a lot of the files, because they are being read from the CD which is read-only.
So, take out the CD and let the PC boot all normal like. You should now be able to install the nvidia drivers and edit any config files (you will need to be root for a lot of this). If the frontend doesn't start automatically, you can just hit "Ctrl-x" to bring up a terminal and type mythfrontend followed by a nice firm stroke on the "Enter" key to start the frontend manually.
NOTE: I noticed that you took some flak for posting in the wrong area of the forum. People seem to be pretty sensitive about staying on-topic, so a good way to avoid any problems is to just post here in the general area. It seems you have already come to that conclusion though

In the time between the last post I reinstalled from the disk, and am going by the pc magazine article I got from human or some other link. (Also I'm thinking: Why did i type that last line about skip...in again?)
I understand that I should be able to get this single box up now, but in all this, the question for the future is: when I decide that wife and I want to go the pchdtv route, does the hd-3000 have to be resident in the backend/all in one? or can one or more hd-3000 be present in several frontends..I have 6 cards to use eventually.
My wife loves our tivo that I hacked for 140 hours or so, but we are now losing our signal due to trees that we cant amputate from our neighbor's property.

The tuners must be in a backend.
The good news is that you can have multiple backends (one master and multiple slaves), so you could setup all the PCs with both a frontend and a backend and put tuner cards in all of them. The master backend coordinates all the recording, so you can schedule a recording from any frontend (or mythweb) and the master backend will choose which tuner records it.
Also, a single backend can have multiple tuners in it. You are only limited by the number of available slots and resources (can the PC process all the incoming data and store it all to disk fast enough). I have seen a box with 4 HD3000 cards working like a champ.
Check out these links to the mythTV docs:

http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-9.html#ss9.3
http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html#ss22.13
I haven't done a multiple backend setup, so maybe someone else could let us know if there are any major gotchas to look out for.[/url]
