I installed KnoppMyth from R5A16. While all of the hardware seems to be correctly detected, almost none of it actually works immediately after Knoppmyth installation and configuration. My hardware is detailed here. I got the TrendNet (TrendWare) TEW-423PI wireless PCI card working by following Craig's ACX100/111 Guide. Even though it appeared to be detected, it didn't work until I followed his instructions to download the latest version. ( acx100-0.2.0pre8_plus_fixes_57.tar.gz is what worked for me.)

I also surprised myself and got LVM working and my /myth dir spans two 160GB drives. Knoppmyth didn't get my /cache partition auto-mounting, so I had to edit /etc/fstab and also chown mythtv:mythv /cache to get to the point where clicking on Watch Live TV didn't crash the backend.

But there's the catch. I can listen to music, and know the audio is working, but when I click on Watch Live TV all I get is about a 15-second black screen and then it goes back to the MythTV menu without ever showing any TV.

I have the channel guide all filled in and working now. I've searched Google and these forums. It even seems like mythtv-setup detects the HD3000 and the PVR-250 cards, but I can't get either of them to do a thing. The logs below make it look like the drivers are installed. dtvscan gives no response, and in fact, I can't even figure out which /dev/??? my cards are at, because most of the usual suspects don't work: /dev/dvb /dev/dtv/ or either of those with 0 appended. Something is at /dev/video0, but I'm not sure which card, and it certainly doesn't play TV! I briiefly was using the S-video out on my circa 1994 Sony 27" TV but text was often so small or blurry that I've switched back to an LCD monitor until I get more stuff working.

Hopefully these logs (from /var/log/syslog but same thing is in /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/messages), and lsmod, lspci suggest something to try to someone here. Thanks:

wow really trying to cram a ton of cards in there huh. Try doing them one at a time. First thing I've never been able to make my leadtek and pchdtv3000 play nice in the same box, second I didn't see any indication of ivtv which would be for your pvr card.

Also probably the most telling log file for this kind of problem would be /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log

Is an HD3000 and a PVR-250 "a ton" of cards? I thought these two cards were well-supported and often used together. (I do have a PCI Wireless card in there too, but I can't run ethernet cable through the living room, so that's a necessity.) Everything else comes on the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard, which I also thought was an often-used and well-supported board.

You mention never being able to get your "leadtek" and hd3000 to work together. I'm not using a leadtek. I'm using a Gainward FX PowerPack! Pro/680 NVIDIA FX5200 256MB AGP 8x Card with S-Video and DVI out. I also thought the FX5200 worked pretty well with Myth.

You're right that I haven't done anything with ivtv. I don't know what to do, and some things make it look like it's already installed. Does the PVR-250 need the latest development version of ivtv or is the stable release the way to go? The ivtv FAQ lists these modules
1. modprobe i2c-core
2. modprobe i2c-algo-bit
3. modprobe tuner type=2
4. modprobe msp3400
5. modprobe videodev
6. insmod saa7115.o
7. insmod ivtv.o

don't I have all that from the basic KnoppMyth install? ivtv talks about recopiling the kernel. Is that necessary?

I've seen others say that their HD3000 gets detected as /dev/video0 when using it with another card, such as the PVR-250, and that causes a problem. I think I have this problem too, but I haven't seen anyone post a resolution.

I got the scan channels thing to work in mythtv-setup for the first time, and now I know to set it to channel 201 to start as it is one that I supposedly get a good signal on (not that I can see it!). I had to finally guess that the number reported from scanning is the one to use and not anything with underscores or decimals in it.

that line lead me to believe that you had the leadtek winfast 2000 tv capture card, though now that I think of it that is most likely the exact reason I can't get the hd3000 and the leadtek working in the same box.

At any rate you should have everything you need for ivtv should be installed by default on knoppmyth, though I didn't see any reference to it at all from your post. try greping ivtv out of your messages log. also entering the pvr card first should make getting livetv going easier, as the hdtv has signal strenght issues and such to deal with, and some people still have issues changing channels in livetv with it.

I was initially fooled here too, but at closer inspection I see both cards listed. here is the PVR-250:
Code:
0000:03:0b.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC16 (CX23416) MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)

And here is the HD300 (note the paired addresses):
Code:

0000:03:0d.2 Multimedia controller: Conexant: Unknown device 8802 (rev 05)

well yes I saw them both in the lspci which obviously means they are physically connected, but I saw nothing in this messages log snippets about ivtv.

Hmmm... I had to make this change to get my PVR-250 recognized but thought it was because of the order that lspci was listing my cards in... Worth a shot, and shouldn't hurt anything...

Thanks for the tip on TrendNet (TrendWare) TEW-423PI. By way of exchanging info, the following may be useful for finding a working wireless card: http://ralink.rapla.net/
Ralink apparently has put some linux drivers for wireless chipsets into the open source. My kind of guys.

Cheers,

alsq

Just on the off chance that this will work
I have a similar setup, and had the same problem with the HD3000. There were a lot of things I tried, but one of the big things that ended up working was this:

I did this all as root
1) stop mythbackend (/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop)
2) run mythv-setup
3) answer yes to clear your capture card settings and no to clear channel settings (unless you want to rescan your channels)
4) set up the PVRxxx first, then set up the HD3000
5) set up the inputs to each card
6) exit mythtv-setup
7) restart mythbackend (/etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start)

Here are two threads with lots of useful info:

It would be nice if the fix was that easy, but order of setup didn't matter for me, what seemed to matter was the order that lspci listed the cards and thus the order that the drivers were set up by /etc/init.d/KnoppMyth-tv If it recognized the bttv driver first, then the ivtv driver simply would not work. I suspect that the "multiple versions of the tuner, saa7115 and tveeprom modules" problem, that other people have described here, is the reason behind this.
