I'm configuring a KnoppMyth box with the following specs:

Asus A7V8X-MX SE
AMD XP 2600+
Asus GF4MX4000 AGPx8 128MB
512MB DDR RAM
DVICO FusionHDTV DVB-T Lite PCI
Dlink DWL-G520 PCI wireless
Shuttle CR40 DVD burner
WD 200GB HDD
Antec Minuet II case

Set up R5A16 OK, had some trouble with the DVICO card but finally got it recognised, yet to set up channels Greg Frost told me how to, so shouldn't be an issue. Had been using the onboard NIC for connectivity to set up, now want to set up wireless. Read lots of posts, checked lots of stuff. R5A16 had madwifi built in, and madwifi FAQ says my card (actual hardware/software revision I have: B3/4.11) is supported.

So I try to configure ath0 - no device found!

dmesg gives me this:



Now, since madwifi compatability list tells me that this card "works", any suggestions, anyone? What else should I look for? (and please don't say "another wifi card" as I want to get this one working!!!)

Do I need to update madwifi (tried apt-get source madwifi, but nothing changed - does it have to be recompiled or something??)

Reading further, I'm still a bit confused as to exactly what card I have. I think it's a Dlink DWL-G520, with hardware revision B3 and software revision 4.11. That's what the box says, anyhow!

This is what lspci -v gives, if it helps at all:



Tried using ndiswrapper with neta3ab inf but it won't work either (ndiswrapper -l tells me that neta3ab is an invalid driver).

Anyone? If no one has a clue I may try installing SUSE and see if that picks it up by default. I know it works with winXP.

I guess the question is when was support for the card added to madwifi and have you tried compiling the latest madwifi?

I need some help compiling the latest madwifi. As I said, I did an apt-get source madwifi, but it didn't change anything. What do I need to do to compile the latest one? A link to a nice howto or something would be good, I couldn't find one.

Couldn't even find which version was the latest for madwifi.

If anything, you only for the source. If you go into /usr/src/ you'll see a tarball. You need to tar it and the kernel.
This should build a madwifi deb. Have you checked the madwifi home page?

I've actually been using a recent version of ndiswrapper lately (I started with madwifi but tried ndis due to stability issues). I've had good luck with it.

Ok, an update: it works!!

I did have to recompile the kernel with the latest version of madwifi; once I had done that, it detected the card fine. It was then only a matter of finding the correct WEP settings to use. The biggest red-herring and time waster for me was that my essid had a "_" in it. Once I removed the underscore, everything worked perfectly!

Will now test stability of this driver and see if I want to try ndiswrapper or not. At this stage I am happy it works at all.

You recompiled the kernel w/ the latest madwifi or you just recompiled the latest madwifi? Details would help. This way, I can incorp it in newer releases...

I actually did both, one at a time, but recompiling the kernel which I did first didn't add the latest madwifi, so then I recompiled madwifi. That's when it worked.

Now it works with dhcp and WEP and everything!!
