So I setup XFree86-4 with the tv-out settings and such...
I have overscan defined in the file as 0.5

If I do a cold boot, X loads on the tv but overscan is not applied.
If I ctrl-alt-backspace out of x, when it automatically reloads overscan is applied properly...

WHY??

also on a side note, how do you set different resolutions in mythtv, I want to try running it at 640x480

Not sure why your overscan is not applying on boot never seen that problem, but to set different resolutions go to the screens section of XF86Config-4 and specify a different resolution in your default color depth. All should become clear when you look over the screens section.

I'm not sure about your situation really as I am using a different method to apply the overscan.

So, in X, I run nvidia-settings to bring the nvidia control panel up. Then I set the overscan there. When I exit that utility it saves a config file in ~/.nvidia-settings-rc

Then to have that file load every time, I edit ~/.fluxbox/apps and added a line right after xset that says...

[startup] {nvidia-settings --load-config-only}

And that works for me. Good luck with your overscan issue.

That's how I do it too. It seems more reliable and consistent to set these from nvidia-settings along with any other tweaks you need for gamma, saturation, flicker, ...

ok I'll give that a try, but how do I run nvdia-settings in X? mythtv autoloads into X and its says Xserver not available is I run nvdia-settings from a diff user.

Well, what alewman said seems pretty clear to me... Do you know how to edit a file under Unix/Linux (there is an FAQ entry on this on the Wiki)? Have you looked at the file (/home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps) he mentioned?

BTW - I also added a line to set the background color to black and thus eliminate any blue edges that maybe left at the top and/or bottom, as a result my apps file looks like this:

When I run nvidia-settings --load-config-only

I get the error

(nvidia-settings:5307): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Any suggestions?

Who are you doing it as?

Are you doing it manually or from the apps file as shown?

Are you doing this from a terminal window on the primary screen?

What does "echo $DISPLAY" show?

I'm doing it as user mythtv
from a putty session but let me try from a terminal window

Ok same error as root or mythtv

Tried stopping gdm via /etc/init.d/gdm stop

This took me out of x I ran the command again as both mythtv and root and had no luck

You need to either be running in the X session as the owner, or have thre DISPLAY variable set appropriately and exported and have access permissions to the session. You didn't mention the setting of you DISPLAY variable that I asked about...
