My problem is in reference to playing back xvid and divx videos over a samba connection using the myth video function (mplayer)

I have recompiled mplayer (1.0pre7) to playback xvid and divx.

Video will randomly skip a few frames when playing back over network. I have not tried playing back video from a local drive because my drive is very small and slow and I think it would be worse. (old laptop 4200 rpm drive)

I have tried a few things with mplayer settings... better but not perfect. Basically it will skip about 5 frames once every 3-5 minutes of playback or so. Perfectally watchable but kinda annoying. Audio/Video sync is not lost.

I think it might be the network card, I am using the onboard nvida nforce nic... I'll try putting a PCI ethernet in when I get a chance.

my computer specs are in my sig.

solved my own problem... it was a samba issue, buffer size was too small

I changed this line in the smb.conf file under the [global] heading

from:
Code:
      socket options = SO_RCVBUF=4096

to:
Code:
      socket options = SO_RCVBUF=16384

now all video plays back smoothly over the network!!![/code]

Interesting... Is the Samba connect between two *nix systems? If so, why not NFS? I've never had a playback issue w/ NFS. As I'm slow working on a new release, I've increase the buffer size in smb.conf to 8192.
