Back on R4V3 I had mplayer happily playing both Shoutcast mp3 streams as well as ASX streams from other Internet radio stations using the trick of having a text file for each station in my mythvideo directory and just passing the URL to mplayer. Now, for some reason, even if I do it live on the command line, mplayer doesn't like to play ASX (WMA?) based streams for me.

Here is an example of what happens:

Code:
mythtv@mythtv:/myth/video$ mplayer http://www.jr-digital.com/asx/chtt.asx
MPlayer 1.0pre6-3.3.5 (C) 2000-2004 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Xeon/Celeron Foster (Family: 8, Stepping: 7)
Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes
CPUflags:  MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled with runtime CPU detection - WARNING - this is not optimal!
To get best performance, recompile MPlayer with --disable-runtime-cpudetection.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I have multiple feeds now doing this.

Woohoo!

I found the solution via google on a debian discussion list:

Hi there,

Is anyone aware of a player which will play .asx files. I have checked
out mplayer and they do not support asx as either a video codec or an
audio codec. Thanks for the help.

'less' ;) Most asx files that I have run across are just short xml text files that include a URI of the real file which mplayer normally doesn't have porblems with.

I did a wget on the URL that used to work, then cat'd the file and sure enough, embedded in the file was the info on the real location of the stream. I pointed MPlayer at that, and Shazam!

So... it would appear I resinstalled MPlayer for nothing... unless I the codec package is not included in the knoppmyth distro?

KnoppMyth doesn't inculde support for patent incumbered codecs.

Thanks for clarifying Cecil.

For anyone who wants to give it a try, adding the codecs from the MPlayer website and recompiling is very straightfoward and is well covered in the INSTALL file that comes with MPlayer.

I did an apt-get remove mplayer to pull out the installed one first, then just followed the text file. Very smooth.

The only thing I did was symlink /usr/bin/mplayer to the new install location.
