Sorry to go OT, but...

I think it should be considered a "smart" appliance with smart energy usage. OK, so make the thing come on once a day for 15 mintues so it can get the program guide if that's really necessary. My Windows PVR doesn't need to do that, however. It just updates the guide whenever I turn it on or whenever it turns itself on to record a show. That's really how I want it to work. I know the BIOS can handle all this, I just don't know if I can handle trying to get it to work on Linux.

BTW, this is a low power machine... Uses as much power as a 75 watt light bulb. But a 75 watt light blub on 24/7 is still going to cost $5/ month and it still generates heat and noise - which I especially don't want in the summer.

p.s. Yes, you did say 'appliance', but maybe a better search system would be more forgiving of my err.

What to say, what to say... The phamplet may not contain much, but it should be enough to get folks started and it is being worked on. If my patience seems short as of late it is because it is... I'm working like a pack of dogs and I'm still trying to help folks on the forum. I've been so busy, I completly forgot that the 8th was KnoppMyth second birthday.

I do a whole bunch of searching various forums and mailing lists in order to make KnoppMyth what it is... If I state search the forum that is because the answer is on the forum. I think I can safely say that if anyone should know what is on the forum, I can.

Don't take any of this wrong, Cecil. I don't think anyone here wants to vent and complain. I think we are all interested in helping you make this a vibrant community. This forum is in danger of becoming much more than just the KnoppMyth forum because Isaac doesn't like forums and won't start one for MythTv. (Personally I think that would be great.) But that will mean even more newbies around and will put greater stress on our "regulars" who answer most of the questions. Hence my interest in the structure of the forum.

If my suggestions regarding the forum structure seems negative, it certainly isn't intended that way. But posting in the wrong forum is epidemic here and I'm sure it's not because people are overly stupid or careless. Please take my suggestions as positive and think about the structure. Especially how phpbb "hides" the major topic of the forum you're in and shows only the minor topic.

Well maybe a little venting and complaining is good, doesn't the squeeky wheel get the greese? Liv2Cod is very correct from what I can see, most everyone here is interested in seeing this project become the best it can be. Cecil and Dale have done an incrediable job of building this marriage of MythTv and Knoppix and it is ONLY alpha!

I lurked on the board for over a year trying to figure out things on my own and with the guidence of the people who went well before me, I have learned at least a little. I have to speak out and join in with the R5A16 release. I can't write a very good script but sure can modify the hell out of one and that information may be useful to a beginner in the linux world. KnoppMyth, as I mentioned elsewhere, is probably becoming one of the most visable packages since Linus started linux.

KnoppMyth offers something for most everyone, tv, music, pictures, etc, plus dangles the carrot of options of the sip phone and who knows what else for future features. Many more new comers will come and I for one will try in my limited ways to help them and in so doing hopefully easing some of the trivial load from Cecil. The only dead lines to meet for the next release is set by them and only when they are darn good and ready to release it. As with a diamond cutter, they must be careful so as not to shatter something precious.

Cecil, Dale, You guys keep smiling also! Great work !

it's been pointed out here before, but I am a big fan of Google's domain filter. Its used to limit a search to a particular domain...as in mysettopbox.tv

In a google search box enter the terms you want to locate:



http://www.google.com/search?num=50&q=SEARCH+TERMS++site%3Amysettopbox.tv

Clearly google search techniques are better then the baseline phpbb. use '-' to filter away results.

so the following search would list all of the forum topics on mysettopbox.tv that have 'static' but do not have 'HD'

I think that's a great idea (Cecil)! And thanks everyone for all the hard work and dedication. This project has renewed my interest in computers as a hobby.

By the way, it isn't the worst thing, I feel, if requests for help that have been answered several times are met with a LITTLE impatients (and some links), it does encourage one to make an effort before posting. I for one am terrified of being snapped at and have spent many hours searching this forum. (I'd search the wiki too if the DNS name would ever resolve.) I have also usually found the answer to my questions here as well as to questions I didn't even know I had.

Man, if you think this group is snippy, try dealing with the Mplayer developers. They redefine the word.

Try PDAPhones sometime. There are about a half a dozen people there who spend their entire day degrading new people and telling them how stupid they are. Every single thread has at least one comment from each of them telling the OP how stupid they are and how they shouldn't bother being on the site if they aren't any smarter than that. I spent about a week there, made the mistake of posting a comment to an existing thread, and was torn three new ones for my trouble. Haven't been back since.

I've found this group to be very good and understandably frustrated when things are answered in stickies or in the documentation (answered as in the exact question asked is right there to read).
