well those sound like the symptoms jarrod was seeing in his firewire howto, and he ended up getting a different firewire card that seemed to fix the problems. I guess I just got lucky, and the onboard firewire of the abit AS8 hasn't given me any problems at all. the only time it doesn't record is when my GF accidentally turns of the cable box.

Hey X,

So how did you test the firewire? In Jarrods' howto he mentions a tool called
test-mpeg... that does not exist in Knoppmyth nor can I find it to download.

Any ideas?

In the meantime:
Just ordered me a Firewire PCI card from http://store.WesternDigital.com
we'll see how that one pans out... Hope its the right chip, cause they don't
specify. It was only $20.. plust $12 shipping 2nd day...

I will post my findings later.

Tim...

Well got the new card in and same issue....

Bummed not sure what to do... I read some posts on other sites in regards
to libieee firewire bug. Not sure if this is the case as I am hit or miss. How
easy is it to upgrade the firewire driver and/or utils. A little skitish on doing
an apt-get upgrade as the last time it jacked my whole system.. changed
everything. It was a mess had to do a rebuild... I Know linux quite well and
I come from the Gentoo world.. I do not know Debian at all.

Any ideas?

The channel does change in mythv just 0 length files.. UGH!

Basically my issue is hit or miss with Firewire. {unreliable at best}

Here is some info below.

well you wouldn't be able to upgrade the firewire driver with apt-get anyways, it's just like in gentoo or any other linux for that matter a kernel module.

Well I meant patch the kernel if there was one.. for the bug if that was my issue... and/or the utils. or anything for that matter...

Did you update anything in your R5A16 build?

I did not have to do anything with the drivers to start with...
All three were already loaded for me....

I did not upgrade anything I'm running stock R5A16. All I had to do was what I stated at the beginning of this thread.
