Who knows what type or CPU it dissipates less heat, AMD or Intel ??
I'm thinking buy a new motherboard, and the heat/noise is one important question, i'm not think in Via and EPIA why its under power i need, i'm thinking in Intel and socket 775 or new AMD Athlon, i'm searching in google about power consumption but i don't see nothing about new cpu's.
Any advices, any ideas ???

Currently, the ultimate for power and low heat ouput is the Intel Pentium M.
Asus make a desktop motherboard for this chip, but I don't know how well supported it will be with myth.

Other than that, the Athlon 64 chips run pretty cool.

AMD like Mephi said... if read some reviews of the new A64 chips at tomshardware.com he has a nice power consumption graph comparing some A64s to Intel somethings.... the AMD (even dual core ones) use less power and create less heat then the Intel chips they tested.

You can also find reviews that measure power consumption by googling something like "athlon 64 4000+ review" which I did not too long ago but don't have the URLs for you.

If you are going to decode high-def TV I recommend a P4. For any other use, I like the cost/benefit ratio of AMD processors.

I'm using older AMD mobile processors.

I've got a Duron 800 Mobile in one box and I just put a 1Ghz Athlon 4 Mobile in the Myth box.

The CPUs use about 25-30 watts. You still need a fan on the heatsink, but you can use a quiet one.

Total power consumption for the whole system is around 75-80 watts with video card, TV card, and WiFi Card.

As long as you have hardware encoding on the TV card, it works well.

I have nvram setup on the Myth box and it only wakes up to record.

I'm not sure about power consumption but my new box consistently runs both cool and fairly quiet with a AMD 64 Venice core. At the moment ambient where the box is is probably about 75-80F and mbmon says the CPU is at 94.1F. During the hottest weather of the summer I never saw it go over 115F. I'm using a Zalman CNPS-7000B AlCu cooler and the case has a dedicated intake funnel for the CPU and a big 120mm exhaust fan. With the right BIOS settings The CPU actually throttles it's own power demands when the CPU load is light.

We designed Dragon to be as quiet as possible, and when people see it, one of their first comments is usually: "Is it on?" Check my signature link for the complete parts list.

We do mod the hardware just a bit, which I haven't published yet, but basically we replace the very noisy active Northbridge heatsink with a modded passive heatsink, and we remove the two rear case fans (and don't hook up the front case fan).

I don't have dbA values for you, but it's much quieter than my DirecTV Tivo. After all, there are only two fans in it - one low-speed 120mm fan in the PSU, and one low-speed 90mm fan on the CPU. And if you don't plan to transport your box, you could even use the 120mm variant of the CPU heatsink for even quieter operation.
