Hello,

I have a system with Intel 3.x Ghz Proc, 1 Gig Ram, PVR-250, and SB Audigy sound card, 1x 80 Gig SATA (on MB) and 2x 220 Gig SATA (on 3Ware card.)

Last year, I installed MythTV on Fedora Core 2 system. I got it up and running including the ability to use LIRC to switch channels via a home made remote on the cable box. However not all pieces of it worked. For example the music player, image display and the transcode options did not work.

I recently picked up ont his again and wanted a more "Useable" system with all functions working. Yesterday I installed KnopMyth on the same system. Before I dug into checking if everything worked I wanted a more familiar interface so I did an apt-get kde. KDE installed just fine however it uninstalled MythTV somehow along the way.

Three questions:

1. Based on the above info is KnopMyth (or MythTV for that fact) stable enough so someone with not too much time to babysit can use it in an everyday manner.

2. Is the KnopMyth system hearty enough so that if I install various apps, e-mail, browser, various web apps I shouldnt be concerned about delicacy issues. -- BTW I know it depends on what I install, I just want a genereal sense.

3. Where can I get copies of the latest KnopMyth RPMs to re-install on my system?

4. Also I am having the damnest time getting the Tuner interface to work on the PVR-250. The Composite works great! Any words of wisdom. I have done ivtvctl -p 4 like a million times. Only works on ivtvctl -p 5. Tried via ptune-ui.pl as well with the same results.

2) no not at the moment. knoppmyth is not designed as a desktop it's designed as a set top box.
3) knoppmyth does not use RPM's it is based on debian and therefore uses .deb's

That symptom indicates that you picked the wrong frequency set. Searching for posts by me with the words "frequency set" will turn up more details and how to fix it.

The thing with MythTV and KnoppMyth (latest version) is that they are not fully fledged products in that they are alpha versions. E.g MythTV is in version 0.18.1 and KnoppMyth R5A16, A standing for alpha.

This is not to say they are not great products, far from it, it is that they do take a little bit of work to setup and once this is done, I think every one can use it.

Numerous times on this forum alone, the words "wife friendly" have been mentioned, so it can be for everyone. MythTV in itself is a great product, but it is just the frontend, to get it to that stage does require the "geek" factor.

To try and fix this Cesman has done a tremendous job, which I feel he does and not alwas getting the credit he deserves, as well as working with www.mythic.tv to help get it out to the masses. With these two teams working together it doesn't take the geek factor out of it, it has just been done for you.

I divide Myth in to two areas: Building/maintaining the box and using it.

It's easy to use, but takes a some effort to build and maintain. Things will get better with time. KnoppMyth makes the build/maintain as easy as it can be. But there are still "nuances" (i.e. bugs) that must be overcome.

I run the KnoppMyth R5A16 so can't really speak in regards to RedHat. The system once installed and tweaked can be just about anything you want it be. The WAF depends on the W and how acceptable they are tech stuff. I have found the machine to like a rock, even with me poking a sharp stick at it.

I have run the system on many different hardware configurations with various degrees of success. An old HP 266 works good but won't do tv. I have a Compaq that the only sound you get is the fan so depending what hardware, will be a factor in the setup difficulties. So far for me, a Walmart e-machine ~2 years old now 1.3 gig, takes a pvr-350 and basicly is "out of the box" to work. Yes it does need a few fine touches for beauty parts, however I use mozilla, thunderbird with myspell, and recently started using freemind also.. Printing is next.

Granted, the R5A16 is Alpha however it is a head and shoulders above anything else that I've seen or used. The developers will have to start looking under rocks to find things to make it better, but they will just make it better.
