I installed KnoppMyth last night and it was not without troubles (but what ever is?). The install its self went ok, it was fast and not allot to it. But when I tried to reboot after the install finished, it would get past POST and would never boot. I was faced with a flashing cursor in the top left corner of the screen and it would never move.

So I hit the forums. After some reading I found several people who had the same problem. I tried several possible solutions without much luck. Then I found a posting that said doing an 'Auto Upgrade' work for them. That finally got the box to boot up!

I was able to get my pvr-250 working and could watch tv and tune channels after I found a script named directv.pl. I was not, however able to get my Firefly remote to work correctly. I can use irw and it does show the commands when I push buttons, so that is good. I guess I just need to map some commands in my .lirc file?

Is there a trick to getting DVD playback working? I fiddled with it a little this morning and when I go to Optical Drives and select DVD it doesn't do anything. When I tried to do it manually with mplayer or xine, I get some errors about not being able to read /dev/dvd. I ran a script to set cd permissions and that didn't help.... Any suggestions?

This morning my wife pointed out to me (.... several times) that the guide was off by 3 hours. I did some research and I got our time zone settings correct, but now I can't get our guide data to populate at all. I'm just going to do an other 'Auto Upgrade' and start over tonight.

This is starting to shape up to be a pretty big project. I've already invested loooots of time setting up my pvr originally (I'm converting us from Windows and BeyondTV+Meedio), and I dont know if I will be able to afford putting a huge number of hours in to this or not. I'm still aiming for the stability to outweigh the issues I'm having during the initial setup process. I have a huge WAF and right now.... and well my cell phone is ringing allot. I am hoping that once I get the remote and guide working that it will let her feel more comfortable with it.

Hi Type82,

Just hate to see a guy with a low WAF :( I think most of your questions have been cover ed on the forum but allow me to give a couple links (may want to mark 1 or 2) that should help you along. The Google search from Liv2cod is real helpful!

Hey mjl

Thanks for the reply and the links. That google search link is nice, makes it allot easier to find what I'm looking for.

Well I now have all of my main issues resolved, except for the remote. That is shapping up to be like a good weekend project. I really think that once I get that going that my WAF will sky rocket.

So I went to bed last night with a warm fuzzy feeling. We could watch live tv, we could record shows, we were impressed with some features that MythTV has that others (BTV) doesn't. The preview for recordings is realy cool!

When I got up this morning... the box appeared to be locked up. Keyboard wouldn't respond to anything. At first I thought I might be looking at a hard ware problem (always a good thing to wake up to) but then I found that I could still ssh in to the box. I kill'd mythfrontend, restarted it and now everything is working again.

Is that common?

At least I was able to ssh in and fix it. There's an other plus for using Linux over a windows-based pvr. I've also had to do that to get mythbackend to restart.

I haven't yet been able to find any logs that are giving me any real information as to the cause of the crashes. I'm planning to put some time in to this box on Saturday.

All I really have remaining is to load up our 30gigs of mp3's, 10 gigs of roms and 2 gigs of pictures. That will be fun. I still got to get the remote working and figure out why we can't play dvd's. So I have some work cut out for me! haha

But all n' all, the WAF is recovering. Life is good

Hi Type82m

If you have a thirty gig drive, open an xterm window and rerun mythtv-setup do no , no and then I forget which menu maybe general), change the size of your cache buffer setting. It is probably larger than your real cahce. Using R5A16?

I was wondering about the cache thing this morning. I need to change the screen resolution so I can actually see everything in mythtv-setup....

And yes I am using R5A16.

Hi Type82,

Refer to cesman's tips for the remote, It was one of the first things he posted with the release. I think it is http://mysettopbox.tv/doc.html or something close.

**edit http://knoppmythwiki.org/?id=KnoppMythInstall try looking near the bottom..

KnoppMyth may be a bit challenging, however just makes the satisfaction of forward steps feel even better :)

Have a good day
Mike

I just can not seem to get anywhere with this remote problem. It's a SnapStream Firefly RF remote. Basically, it's an X10 RF remote.

I run lirc-reconfig.sh. I select yes to tell it to create the /dev files. I select yes to tell it I want to reconfigure. I select option 8 (USB Device).

Next I have two options that I think should work for my remote. First I selected option 1 (X10 I & II RF Remote). I tried it again with the other listing, X10 RF Remote (user space). I get the same results with both options.

Next, I tell it yes to "automagically select support for my hardware" and to automatically build the modules. I get the following:

Code:
Setting up modutils file
Building kernel modules ... (output -> /tmp/lirc-kernel-source.6mkCc6)
##############################################
##### Couldn't build LIRC kernel modules #####
##############################################

when I look at the output file, I see the following:

Code:
root@omertv:~# tail /tmp/lirc-kernel-source.jtKuhJ
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/modules/lirc/drivers'
test -z "*~" || rm -f *~
rm -rf .libs _libs
rm -f *.lo
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/modules/lirc/drivers'
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/modules/lirc/drivers'
rm -rf modules
make: Nothing to be done for `debconf'.
cut: modules/*.ko.KVERS: No such file or directory
make: *** [install] Error 1

I've even formated and tried again. No change.

Any suggestions? I'm very frustrated.... When I did my first install a couple of days ago, I was able to get the modules to compile with the reconfigre script. I was even able to run irw and see the commands when I hit a button on my remote. Then I formated and rebuilt and have never been able to get back to that point. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong....

Hi Type82,

Sorry but I can't help with that remote. I have only really dealt with the pvr remotes which I thought you had a 250. Doesn't the 250 have a remote like the 350?

Anyway, google the forum and maybe someone has been down the street as you are travelling.

Good luck
Mike

well at this point its not a problem with the remote its self, its a problem with lirc. For some reason it can't compile the kernel modules. I'm trying to compile the atiusb kernel module and its failing.

OK... I installed lirc from source. I was able to get some modules compiled.

Now ... I can load lirc_atiusb module. From there, I can run mode2, and I can see responces form keypresses on my remote.

With lircd running, mode2 still works. However when I try to use irw, it does not show any responces from key presses on the remote. lircd does show that its using atiusb. In fact, when I dont have the lirc_atiusb module loaded, lircd segfaults and says no such file found /dev/lircd

I'm not sure what I'm missing here. Has anyone run in to his before?

Man... when I get motivated I get stuff done :)

So I found out about this program called irrecord. I went through some stuff and now I got it working. But it looks like I might have re-invented the wheel after looking around the forums.

I under more about lirc now than I wanted hahaha

The WAY is raising
