MythTV newbie here. Several of my keys do not work as described in the documentation. Example: 'F" does nothing (supposed to allow picture adjustment). Not during live TV, not during playback of a previously recorded show. 'R' key sometimes will start recording in live TV, sometimes not. Sometimes it even says "Recording channel 7" for example, but doesn't do it. 'R' never cycles through different recording options as documented. In EPG, 'R" does not go from Recording to Not-Recording. It will start a recording in EPG, but subsequent presses do nothing. The only way I've found to stop a recording in progress is to back out to Delete Recordings screen and actually delete the recording that is in progress. (Is there any way to stop a recording in progress but NOT delete it? i.e., save it for later viewing.)

The documentation mentions different functions for Left/Right if in StickyKeyMode or not, but no mention of how to get in or out of StickyKeyMode.

Am I missing something obvious and making user errors, or is the documentation bad, or does my setup have some problem/misconfiguration? I haven't touched any key mapping settings ... they are at the defaults that came with R5A16.

on the epg if you just press space you should have a stop recording option.

the F key only works if you have use xv color controls checked in the tv playback options.

Man, that was a fast response. Thanks!

Sorry to ask apparently dumb questions. I did read the docs and searched these forums prior to asking, but I guess I missed these answers.

well the option from the epg about stopping a recording I think is fairly new, and I don't think I've seen any references to it, I just happened to run across it, though the xv color controls has been mentioned a couple of times.

Well, I don't know how obvious it is, however once you have started a recording from a watching tv mode, you may back out and go to media library. There should be a "hot" listing and if you arrow over to it, then hit right arrow once more a secondary menu should open up where you have the option to stop the recording. This option does not show unless you are recording which makes sense.

Pressing R to start a recording will only work if there an actual show listed in the database. You can always record through manual settings. Works easiest through the webpage IMHO.

also, you can go to any place that you can delete a recording (Manage Recording, Watch Record screens) and jsut delete. if its a recording in progress, deleting it will stop the recording and delete the file

Thanks for the help, all. I think I'm having some kind of problem that is confusing me about whether things are recording or not. Last night I hit 'R' while watching live TV (the football game). I can't remember exactly how I got to a later screen, but there was an option to stop recording. I did this. The I went back to watching live TV. I hit 'M' to go to EPG. It did, but EPG was showing that it was still recording. But I don't know why 'M' let me get to EPG in the first place if it was truely recording. Other times I've seen that when you are recording 'M' brings up a menu where you can choose "Edit Recording" (but there is no "Go To EPG" option). If you are NOT recording 'M' gives an choice to go to EPG (but not one to edit the recording). So I'm confused. Was is or was it not really recording? EPG showed a red W icon and said the show was recording. The "Select Recording to Watch" screen listed the show in red font, which I thought meant that it was recording.

Anyway, I think I need to play around a bit more and get a good feel for what MythTV is _supposed_ to do in a given circumstance. I'm just confusing myself more and more (and probably all of you as well!) Really ... I'm not an idiot. I just appear like one at present!

once a recording is started the epg will always say it's still recording wether you delete or stop it, sort of hokey in that maner, however it will free up that tuner even though the epg still seems to thing a recording is in progress. I think you have just stumbled into a section of mythtv that is just not completely polished yet.

Thank you so much for sharing this tidbit of info. I have no problem working around glitches or unpolished areas - I expect to run into them. It's nice when someone else confirms what I'm seeing. Problem is that I'm too new to know the best way to describe something I've run into, thus making my forum searches suboptimal. I'm learning... Thanks!
