Quote: When the script says it doesn't know how to handle a remote that's in the menu, this is our way of saying that we know people have the remote, but we don't have their config files and/or lspci data. You have to understand that the KnoppMyth developers do not have all possible hardware sitting around Smile We need people to contribute things like config files for their remotes.
Human,
I'd like to help. I have an iMon remote that came with my Silverstone LC10M case. I don't have it working yet (just barely finished installing R5A22 on the box). What do you need from me?
Also, thanks again to everyone who contributes to this project! I love that R5A22 automatically installs the nVidia drivers, and my HD3000 was up and running right away (no extra config beyond the normal setup stuff)!

When you get the remote working, tell us how you did it (use the thread I started on remotes).

OK, well start with breaking the problem down.
First, make a SF page . Enable CVS, mailing list, and bug tracking
Second, enter the scripts in /usr/local/bin into the CVS and use that as a reference for future patches, etc.
Third, sort the components that comprise KnoppMyth into four groups:
1. Those which are stock Debian unmodified packages with no post install configuration (just a list with versions noted would probably suffice here and could easily be converted into a script)
2. Those which are stock Debian unmodified packages with post install configuration changes (again a list with changes noted, preferrably if they could be scripted)
3. Those which are modified debian packages or built from source (list and note steps -> convert to script)
4. Those which are completely custom and unique to KnoppMyth (list and convert to script)
Am I missing something? I suspect that most if not all of the above information already exists in cesman's head, in notebooks, or in a journal someplace.
Now, I do not expect this would just jump out of cesman's mind completely formed but I'd bet over time and with a few iterations the structure would emerge. I think eventually, this approach would allow a script to build top to bottom KnoppMyth from its components.
But hey, ultimately it is your project and I am just glad you are doing it. If this approach is not compatible with your style in this project, well that is OK too. I am merely trying to help and maybe allow me and others to join in on the development process rather than just watching from the outside.
Thanks for the reply!

Whilst I am not a develper of KnoppMyth, I leave that to the experts I have worked with one or two other users of the system to create my own scripts and customisations to get the system to do what I want. There are a number of other examples on this forum to show what other users are doing in a similar vain.
Yes I agree that it is helpful to raise issues, but it is like critising a politician saying I don't like this or that and not offering a better or alternative solution. I myself have recently been guilty of this same sin.

Human wrote: C-4) I'm maintaining this script now. Since it is text-based, how can we describe the differences between the gray remote and silver remote? I agree that either remote could look like either color to you if you don't have the other one handy for comparison.
The remote does have a model number, which is probably good to include as well as the color. Telling just how things look on the outside is dangerous, because even if the outside looks the same it can be completely different inside (electronics, software etc).

Agreed, but we still need these specifics, such as model number. Until someone provides them, we're left with the silver/gray distinction.

Greenstalk, we haven't heard a reply from you since November 3rd. Are you sticking with us to help improve KnoppMyth?

A415-HPG is one of them (and I think it is the silver one).

Some online searching indicates that it is Thanks!

I keep coming back to the shapes of the remotes and the number of buttons as the only clear way to differentiate. In this case since pictures aren't an real possibility lets look at button count... How about location of the colored buttons
The older "grey" remote has Red (UL), Green (UR), Yellow (LL), Blue (LR) in a square around the OK and "directional" cluster.
R G
Y B
The newer "silver" remote has them in a line Red (L), Green, Yellow, Blue (R) at the bottom of the remote.

First, I think you guys are over reacting a little bit to the usability analysis. Now I haven't read it yet, so I'm not sure what he said, or how harsh it was, but its nice to have free advice! Don't slam it back down his throat, encourage it! Bug him with emails to help fix it. Don't be afraid of criticism, this is OSS!
Also, I am back to forum after a long hiatus. I previous used myth .15 and its associated knoppmyth. As i recall, it was a bitch to get working.
So, when i installed the latest version today, i was QUITE pleasantly surprised. EVERYTHING worked except the sounds right off the bat. Amazing. I will work with alsa mixer tomorrow if my memory serves me correctly, but i wanted to congratulate the developers! Great work, you've come a long way, and keep up the good work!

Interesting that you'd comment w/o reading what he wrote. This is exactly why I won't respond to him. He ran his soup cooler with even bothering to see if these issues were being addressed or what. Some of the issue he raised are non-issues. If you read the thread, he complains about things he doesn't seem to realize are how PVRs are meant to function. Frankly, the MythTV mailing list isn't the place to bring up issues about KnoppMyth.
You are right, this is Open Source... So simply put, instead of writing a thesis on what is wrong, write code. Welcome back and you're welcome.

And hopefully that will be the last time i can use that excuse , as i should have the mythbox working tomorrow.
But as the auto-install was running, i was telling my roommate what a bitch this project was going to be. The last time i did it, i had to edit txt files and change my tv tuner types, mess with alsa, download nvidia drivers. This time around, wow, it just worked. It was making "pretty, pretty pretty goooooood (larry david voice)" noises all over the house.
I am glad to see you guys made remarkable improvements in the ease of installation. Granted i am an electrical engineer, so i might have an easier time with it then others, but it really is much simpler now.
As for future criticisms of the product... I read it over quickly, and honestly, it didn't seem that bad. I realize some of the people here might be taken aback by what might seem like an insult to all of their hard work, but i really think this guy was trying to help, even if he didn't go through the proper channels, or had exceedingly high expectations of things (had to enter zip code twice, big whoop).
This isn't apple, so everyones expecting a few rough edges, and thats why we like it. If you ever feel unappreciated, just remember there are LOTS of people out there, who without mythtv would have scrapped the project and bought a tivo months ago. Keep up the good work
