I am trying to access my mythBox outside of my LAN network. I have a Linksys router which connects to the WAN.

First I need to setup the mythbox with a static IP address. How can I accomplish this, using netcardconf?

Also I would appreciate any tips to setting up the Linksys router for external access.

Yes, netcardconfig can be used to set a static IP. Consult the manual for your router.

I use an older Linksys router. I use VNC to connect to my PC and then log into the local IP because I have an old PC I use as a personal web server, but you should be able to use the Port Forwarding feature on the router and foward port 80 to the internal static IP of the Myth box and it should work okay.

note if you are going to do this I would HIGHLY recommend that you read the thread about securing mythweb. Otherwise anyone on the internet can change your recordings. And if you don't think anyone will ever look at your machine just turn on all loging on that firewall and have a looksee at how many people attempt to access your box on a daily basis.

I was able to setup a static IP address but when I run mythfilldatabase I get the following error:

request failed with code: 500:Internal Server Error
if problem persists, examine browser settings and
try setting 'http_proxy' environment variable
otherwise post problem to xmltv-users@lists.sf.net for assistance

What does this error mean?

not sure, but when you set your ip manually a cople of things to remember. You have to set a default gateway. Second if you want to resolve anything by name you have to set your nameservers.

try to ping google.com and see if you can. If not you may not have the nameservers or gateway set.

I want to set up my mythtv box for external access as well... currently I have my windows network set up for assigning IP addresses automatically.... is it true that I have to set up the Mythbox to be static in order to set up the external access?

I have read about securing the mythbox with a password, so i will do that as soon as I figure out how to access the mythbox remotely. I have a linksys wireless router.

well when it comes to computers there's not really many HAVE to's, but static is the best way to go. otherwise you can see what address it has and then forward the port to that address and hope it doesn't change, or you can setup a dhcp mapping, so it gets the same address every time thus basically simulating a static address while taking advantage of the automatic configuration.
