Hi all,

I have been busy the last couple of days configuring a new install(R5A22...I know...). I own a panasonic PT-AE300 (specs.) projector which I intend to use as main screen. The computer is a P3 600mhz with a winfast 3D s325 (Nvidia TNTII M64) card. Prior to knoppmyth I ran a win98 system on this very machine. On that system I used 960x540 resolution using the parameters below:
Code:
PowerStrip timing parameters:
960x540=960,33,40,79,540,9,1,19,37750,272

Generic timing details for 960x540:
HFP=33 HSW=40 HBP=79 kHz=34 VFP=9 VSW=1 VBP=19 Hz=60

Linux modeline parameters:
"960x540@60" 37.750 960 993 1033 1112 540 549 550 569 +hsync +vsync

Problem is, I can't get it to work in knoppmyth. I have read up on how to edit xf86config-4 and it does indeed switch to my new res but it looks like a disaster.

It only switches to 960x540 if I remove the other res options.
Code:
SubSection "Display"
      Depth     24
      Modes    "960x540@60"
   EndSubSection

If I enter another res option like this:
Code:
SubSection "Display"
      Depth     24
      Modes    "960x540@60" "1024x768"
   EndSubSection

It always defaults to 1024x768 and won't let me ctrl+alt [+/-] switch to 960x540. I somehow feel it doesn't like my custom setting...

On the windows machine 960x540 looked sweet and without artefacts with just a tad bit overscan. Since I know my graphics card accepts these settings and I know the panny will as well, it leads me to believe the driver is causing this.

Any hints?

Offhand my questions would be: what version of the Nvidia drivers did you install, and when you say running that modeline "looks like a disaster," can you be more descriptive? Did you get no display, rolling display, severely overscanned display, etc?

That's kind of an old Nvidia card, I think, and it might matter which drivers you installed. You might try installing the older ones--there are details on the forum somewhere that say it's non-destructive and you can always switch back to the newer ones without having to reinstall again.

I've never understood how to use multiple resolution options properly in the Modes section. Either I can't get them to switch, or when they do switch, they still use the highest resolution available to set up the desktop and then let you pan over that higher-res desktop with the lower-res display.

That's a TNT card the latest nvidia drivers that support that card are the 6629, so if you have anything newer than that installed you'll need to downgrade.

If ctrl+alt++ doesn't rotate throught the resolutions then X is for some reason refusing to use your custom modeline. If you check out /var/log/X<tab>.log it should tell you why it's not using that particular resolution.

Thanks for the very informative responses. I'll check my drivers and see if I can work it out.

Severly overscanned and very squeezed horizontally. Also somewhat distorted image, very hard to read the text in bash. Not rolling tho... :D
