What settings should i use for a tv? 800x600 Resolution? What about refresh rates, do i have to do anything special. If i ruin my dad's tv i'm toast :cry:

Popular choices are 800x600 and 640x480 (both 4x3 aspect ratio). I seem to remember that someone actually had a 1024x768 mode that they cooked up and had some success with. :shock:

Others go for 720x480 failing to realize that they're taking things too literally (the theoretical 720 includes stuff that's off the edges) and then wonder why things look funky. :roll:

The critical bit is not to exceed the allowed timings, which for an NTSC TV are:

        HorizSync 30 - 50
        VertRefresh 60

I've been using 800x600 with the modelines given in this example: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=XF86ConfigForFX5200HowTo for over a year and a half with no problems.

The absolute most important part is the

VertRefresh 60

you should make sure both match what tjc said, but if you're going to typo one make it the horizontal. :lol:

as long as this is set then its very difficult to create anything that will cause damage, because it generally falls out of range. Now don't go and claim I said it couldn't be done, because I'm sure someone will write some ridiculously long algorithm to compute a modeline that can still cause damage just to prove me wrong. :wink: :roll:

You REALLY need to do some reading or this is going to take forever and be a giant time sink for everyone involved. Go back and read the KnoppMyth Pamphlet at http://www.mysettopbox.tv/doc.html which tells you the basic steps, then check out the wiki particularly the Unix/Linux tips page at http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=LinuxTips which will answer question like "how do I edit a file". Search the wiki and forums for other details, example configurations, ...

I hooked it up to my tv with s-video out on my video card, booting up the text was all fine and readable, and when it got to MythTv it was scrambled cabbage. I edited the file to change the refresh rate, but i'm not sure what the resolution is set at. Is that also in the same file?

Boot up uses old fashion least common denominator VGA. The MythTV GUI runs on top of X and needs some relatively advanced graphics support. X needs to be configured to use the right drivers, and resolutions. All the settings are in the same file. There are thousands of lines of postings here in the forums about this topic, and more in the wiki. Time to do some homework...

The difference between 640x480 and 720x480 is less the presence of overscan (the stuff that's off the edges) and more the fact that TV pixels are non-square. Computer pixels are square. So 640x480 square computer pixels get stretched on playback to 720x480 non-square TV pixels, as do the other square pixel 4:3 dimensions of 800x600 and 1024x768.

While what you said is also true, it just adds another layer of distortion. For X the pixel width is the active area. On a 640x480 screen you expect to be able to see every pixel from 0,0 through 640,480. On a TV which nominally has a 720 pixel width you only expect to see about column 40 through 680 and often less. It's a problem of comparing apples and oranges or real versu decimal kilobytes/megabytes/gigabytes.

Make the bit that says:

Say this instead (just like it says in the second post of this thread):

Ok i changed that looked around the wiki and stuff but am still confused. I updated to the lastest KnoppMyth using "tv-out" command so it should work for tv-out. I'm using S-video from the videocard to my tv. The booting up sequence looks fine. MythTv doesn't. So it's Resolution? I heard something about "X" i'm not sure what that is i though it was a variable of some sort. I know i'm not too good at this, and my questions are probably stupid, but i need help :-/ so i can learn.

ok the tv option during boot only allows you to install on a tv, you still have to make the changes to the XF86Config-4 file.

Yes i edited that file, i can watch it boot up on my tv, but then i get an image on which looks like an extremely distorted MythTV image

if it's just a bunch of quickly moving horizontal images the most likely cause is that somehow you still don't have a 60hz vert refresh. that one setting is 90% of the battle in my experience.
