KnoppMyth works. Got past the kernal corruption problem, remote and IR Blaster work, and now on to DVD issues.

I can not play DVD's in the frontend, via cli as myth or as root. Without exagerating, I've read more than 35 topics regarding DVD playing problems. The vast majority of them are related to not being able to play in the frontend but can play via cli as root. I can not play DVD's period.

Have tried varying commercial DVD's with the approprite pineapple installed. The Sony DVD-RW will play the same DVD's with two different flavors of Linux, so I think the hardware is fine.

I am at a loss. Below is some output from various things found in the posts I've read.

Any information or a nudge would be greatly appreciated.

The errors you have point to the missing "key" library with questionable legality to even have on your machine. This library is not needed to playback unencrypted DVD's. Thats Why your xine stuff shows everything ok.

You won't find any information pertaining to setting up your system to play Commercial DVDs on these forums.

Perhaps I didn't make myself very clear.

I can not play a DVD. At all. Any kind of DVD. Xine bails everytime.

I am not asking about the ever-so-secret thing. I already know about that and am not concerned with it.

I just want to play DVD's. :cry:

The segmentation fault after loading Pineaapple can't be good. I think that is a good place to focus. Can you use the drive as a data drive? Does it fault every time you access it? It's outa my league. Hardware? Software? I dunno.

I put a music cd in the DVD drive. Using the front end on the KnoppMyth box yeilds no results. It seems not to know there is a cd in the drive. No importing or playing.

Exiting the frontend, I try to use xine to play the CD from the fluxbox gui. I get an error in xine that says:

There is no mrl.

Then I notice that xine states that just about no matter what I do.

This DVD drive is the same drive that I used to install KnoppMyth, and have used it with other flavors of linux. I'd like to believe that it is physically functioning, it's just not getting along with some aspect of what is on this box presently.

I'm not sure but I think the fact that the libdvdread errors are referring to "/dev/hda1" but that your DVD drive is apparently at "/dev/hdd" is causing the problem.

Can you describe your hardware setup? How many HDs, how many optical drives? Are you using SATA HDs or PATA?

Do either of these threads look like they are relevant? They do to me but I'm not positive.

green, I think the /dev/hda1 error is significant. I would check the contents of .xine/config, particularly this line:
Code:
input.dvd_device:/dev/dvd

Also, maybe add some more access to /dev/hdc - maybe chmod 666 it?

What version of KnoppMyth?

Earlier I posted the output of a few things. Well, those things have changed and I do not know what to do about it.

My original post was:

Code:
root@mythtv:/home/mythtv# ls -al /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom /dev/hdd
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom     8 Dec 14 00:05 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdd
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom     8 Dec 14 00:05 /dev/dvd -> /dev/hdd
brw-rw----  1 root cdrom 11, 0 May  7  2004 /dev/hdd

Now it looks like this:

Code:
root@mythtv:/# ls -al /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom /dev/hdc
ls: /dev/hdc: No such file or directory
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom 8 Dec 16 19:14 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom 8 Dec 16 19:14 /dev/dvd -> /dev/hdc

See the problem?

How do I get /dev/hdc back? Or can I ?
I had two optical drives. I removed one so as to keep things simpler. The one I removed was not the DVD burner. The one that is still in the box is the same one I used to do the install and it is still plugged in the same way. Nothing was moved around, just the one cd-rom removed and it was secondary slave. That's it.
Apparently, this box didn't appreciate that very much. Yes, the power was off when I did it. Yes, this box has been rebooted (a few times).

Now Xine does not believe that there is a /dev/hdc or course.

Any ideas on how I get /dev/hdc back so we can move on?

nigelpearson said to check:
Code:
input.dvd_device:/dev/dvd

That line does not exist. However, I did find something similar, and it said that the input for for DVD was: /dev/dvd but with /dev/hdc mysterioulsy AWOL, /dvd does not exist.

ceenvee703 said to check the 2 links he provided:
I did, but was not able to fix anything as a result. Thanks for the posts, I appreciate it. There is some valuable information there that I will have to return to once the present issue is resolved.

Liv2Cod mentioned the segmentation fault. I have no idea what to do about that.
I've tried running the script smash_skull_into_desk.sh multiple times. But that has not fixed anything yet.

Any further thoughts, clues, tips, suggestions, or brainstorms? I am still stumped.

mknod is the tool you need. Search for that keyword here. I don't know the major/minor numbers off the top of my head but I'll check when i get home.

Did some poking around, thanks to tjc's suggestion.
I googled mknod and found some stuff.

Before I did something to bork this, the output from ls -al /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom /dev/hdc was:

Code:
root@mythtv:/# ls -al /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom /dev/hdc
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom     8 Dec 14 00:05 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdd
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom     8 Dec 14 00:05 /dev/dvd -> /dev/hdd
brw-rw----  1 root disk  22, 0 May  7  2004 /dev/hdc

So, based on that, would mknod go like this?:

Code:
mknod /dev/hdc b 22 0

And then this?:

Code:
chmod 666 /dev/hdc

I am afraid to do this unless somone can confirm.
What puzzles me, is this:
mknod
b = block device
22 = Digiboard serial card
0 = ??

Digiboard ?? What is 0 ??
If 11 (eleven) were used, it would be:
11 = SCSI CD-ROM devices
Or:
3 = First MFM, RLL and IDE hard disk/CD-ROM interface
Or, 8, as listed above in the original ls -al:
8 = SCSI disk devices
Those make more sense than 22. But then again, this is all less comprehensible than Greek to me.

Any takers?

Yes, that sounds OK, I'd probably do the permissions differently by adding the needed user to the cdrom group, but that's not a big deal. The major and minor are definitely 22 and 0. Double check by doing ls -l /dev/hdc*

Ok. I did it.

Now I have this:

Code:
root@mythtv:/# ls -al /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom /dev/hdc
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom     8 Dec 16 19:14 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom     8 Dec 16 19:14 /dev/dvd -> /dev/hdc
brw-rw----  1 root root  22, 0 Dec 16 21:35 /dev/hdc

I have another problem now. Yes, it is something I screwed up when throwing a fit.
I uninstalled Xine via Synaptic. Dumb. I know. I was being immature and throwing a fit and decided to uninstall and re-install. The uninstall went well. The re-install did not. Not all the files that came out, are in the repositories to put back in.

So, I'll be doing another search and possible post to fix that. Don't want to start a new topic in this thread for fear of getting my hand spanked.

However, I certainly do appreciate everyones effort in helping me get this far.

Thank you very much, kind people.

You need to make hdc be owned by the cdrom group. The links don't matter because they're always just pass throughs, those could have been root:root with no issue, the ownership and permissions on the actually device entry are what matters.

I have a similiar issue with DVD playback. I also get a can't open /dev/hda1 and can't open /dev/dvd. I tried the different things posted in this thread, but they don't seem to do any good.

I guess it's been a really long time since we walked someone through the diagnoses on this... Let's start by identifying your drives. What does this show:
Code:
dmesg | grep 'hd.:.*drive'
