I am running R5A22 and have the newest pvr-350 with the silver remote. I am what you consider to be a newb but not totally. I have tried everything on the forums to get the remote working but have had no luck. Could you please help me setting up the remote from the beginning to end. I know it is alot to ask but I know there are tons of other people out there that have the same problem as me.

how do you actually edit the config file. Like what program do you use

If you're not a Unix person "nano" is probably your best bet.
