Well I had a bt878a based tv tuner for a while but for christmas I got a PVR-150. I installed it, figured I'd reinstall KnoppMyth just to make things easier. I messed around with all the guides between the wiki and the forums, and almost all are completely out of date. I reinstalled again and just tried it, and it worked perfectly...until the remote died. All I did was redo my fstab so that /myth was using hdb1 (200GB drive) and activate samba...

All I'm reading all over the place is that the PVR-150 is "flakey."

I'm debating reinstalling AGAIN just to make it work, and try to recreate the problem...

anyone have any ideas?

Search for threads that mention ivtvctl and how to reset the remote. There's actually a pretty simple work arond that keeps it talking. There should be a more robust fix in the next version of the IVTV driver.

see, everything I've found by searching was mostly for the ir blaster and getting the card plain WORKING...thanks.

Works for now. I'll post again if it fails again, but I expect it to stay up.

ok, after a reboot...the remote doesn't work again... I don't understand what exactly's going on.

according to so_'s post in http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7458 and reading mark's instructions from http://www.blushingpenguin.com/mark/blog/?p=23 it seems that the problem is simply ivtv's driver support needed i2c repatched, and when you install it once it's done. So...following the instructions from so_ I got it installed, rebooted, and it worked fine. Then after testing it and playing with my mixer settings (older SB Live! 5.1 card's a bit difficult to get setup "perfectly"), I went back out to the main menu and mythtvfrontend crashed. That happens to me sometimes, so I just rebooted. After the reboot I went out for a smoke and my roommate sat down to watch tv, and the remote's again not working...

after reading all this stuff for the remote it's getting a little mind numbing. I've been using linux for years but this box is my first dive into tv tuners and remotes...

I'm wondering if it's worth it to get another remote? I haven't really looked into any of the other possibilities, serial, usb, whatever... maybe a wireless keyboard, hack it up and repaint the buttons. that'd be easy...

Did you search for the words I told you too? There was a pretty clear thread not to long ago (say within a week or so) that describes how to set up a crontab entry to run:
Code:
ivtvctl -d /dev/video0 --reset-ir
every minute or so. This is supposed to provide relief from the symptoms.

I've tried that as well but the command doesn't seem to do much. it seems that my IR controller is dropping incredibly fast sometimes...

YOU'RE THE ONE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!! DAMN YOU!!

no, just kidding

take your time, I'd rather see a complete, fully working fix than something halfassed and thrown together. It's good to know that people are really working on this though.

I tried the blushingpenguin.com fix and couldn't get it to work. I've been doing the ivtvctl --reset-ir crontab fix in the meanwhile.

A working fix would be great...thanks for working in this j0ly!

guys i truly apoligize on how long this is taking, im having some issues with my sound right now, if you would like to take a listen to my sounds problems and mabey even help out (ive been talking with Hans and Mark Weaver about this issue) here is the link to the samples that i have recorded off my card

http://www.controlaltdeleted.com/myth/video

there are 4 files there, they are recorded for a couple of seconds, then stopped, and the next one recorded .... do you guys hear the staticy noise as well? (on files 2 and 4) ??

Once this is solved, i can rework the tutorial, and all should be working fine.

thanks

Scott

Yes...and no. I am no longer throwing things against the wall because my remote stopped working for no reason. Although every now and then, I'll go to pause a show and my remote won't work. I'll just sit and wait the 1-59 seconds out until the next minute hits to kick off my cronjob.

Most of the time you are watching TV, you aren't hitting remote buttons, so it's not like I'll notice every drop out, but sometimes I do. I'd say if I watch TV for 2 hours, I may notice it drop how and have to wait maybe 1 or 2 times. This annoys me, but it is a reasonable temporary fix. I've heard there are issues with the IR Blaster when performing this reset, but I haven't configured my IR Blaster yet so I can't comment.

In my opinion, the PVR150 drop-out error isn't as well documented as it should be. Being that it is the most affordable card in probably the most widely recommended line for Myth, I would say that more and more new Myth users will be buying this one and expecting the remote to work perfectly out of the box. As did I. It wasn't until recently that a search on this board would turn up some posts that mention the problem. I found the blushingpenguin site through Google.

Anyway, when I built my myth box about a month ago, the remote would suddenly drop out and I thought it was something I did wrong. After several backtracks and reboots, I would give up, reinstall R5A26, and start from scratch again. I repeated this process (although getting more efficient each time) 5 times until I found out that the PVR150 had this known issue. When a solid fix for this is created, I think it should be noted and linked to on Knoppmythwiki.

The fix is actually quite simple.

1) knoppmyth is starting hotplug (required for firmware loading) after
lirc, which implicitly loads the ivtv module.

and some other steps as well, ie upgrading to ivtv 0.4.2 which resolves the need for your cronjob, as marks code is introduced in to the release (this release is not stable, and their are some changes to the firmware name and such - but it is working)

ill have a tutorial hopefully together tonight, and posted shortly, of how i got my issue resolved.

I continued to play around with my build two nights ago and (based upon a post I read somewhere else here) decided to start removing any optional things that I had put on. When I deactivated SAMBA everthing clicked back into place.

I noticed that you also had SAMBA installed. Try stopping it and try your remote.

I am starting to think that this is not an across the board problem with the silver remote but just some modules that interfere with it.

Mine has been working flawlessly for 2 days now. :D
