Hi everyone...

Now that my MythTV system is finished (see my post in the Teir 1 section), I have a quick question... My system is currently using a Hauppage WinTV-PVR 500 (dual tuner), and is working beautifully, but the system is shared among myself and two other people (soon to be three), so it does run into occasional scheduling conflicts.

I still have the ATi TV Wonder I used in my first partially successful attempt to make a MythTV system, but the quality I get from it is significantly worse than what I get from the PVR 500 (as is to be expected).

So to get to my question... Is there a way I can install the ATi card, but have it set up so that it only uses it if there is an unavoidable conflict? Example: If 3 shows are airing at the same time, but one is showing again later, record that one later, but if the only available scheduling of all three shows is at the same time, record one using the ATi card.

Looking forward to your input. Thanks in advance.

There is an option in the mythtv-setup when you set up the tuners. You can give each tuner a priority. Giving the PVR-500 tuners the highest priority will ensure they are used to record first.

That's not what I asked. I want to set it up such that the 3rd tuner is used only as an absolute last resort. Setting priorities will only make it so that the 3rd tuner is used 3rd.

if you set the priorities right, the ATi will only be used when the other 2 are already being used

Right, but that's still not what I asked, so I'll restate it yet again.

I only want the 3rd tuner to record if AND ONLY IF the 3rd program does not appear again in the schedule and CANNOT BE RECORDED OTHERWISE.

Why is it your are screaming at someone that is trying to help you? He has answered your question to the best of his ability. Do you know that he is wrong? From my experience, MythTV will automatically record a program later if things get busy. If you desire a greater explaination, I suggest the MythTV mailing list...

I don't think what you are suggesting is possible. Essentially you want Myth to look for later showings whenever you have a recording conflict, and then use the ATI tuner if it can't find any. I'm pretty sure Myth doesn't have that advanced of a scheduling capability (and I don't think any HTPC/DVR does).

I apologize for getting upset. I thought I clearly stated my question, but apparently I did not.

I kind of expected that the answer was that this isn't possible, but I asked just to see if anyone ever looked into this before.

Thanks anyway.

this is my experience too. records will be delayed to a later time to avoid a lower priority card if possible.

This is good and bad for me. I set different priorities to cause records to occur on a different tuner then the one that is used by default for Live viewing.

While that part works fine, it does cause recordings to be delayed while a tuner (default for Live) often sits idle

I like getting clear questions. I also like giving clear answers (actually sometimes, I'll give hints because I want folks to learn). But MythTV has lots of options. One has to try the various options and see what it does to get a great understanding.

I don't know if you have figured this out yet, but i have stumbled on the solution. If you set the tuner to a NEGATIVE priority it will record only if there are no other shows are on at a later time.

Whoa, sweet! I never would have thought to try that.

Thanks.
