Could be any number of things. Try exiting the front end, hitting Alt-X to get an xterm, and running alsamixer. Make sure that your MASTER and PCM outputs aren't muted (hitting "h" will get you the alsamixer help screen ) Be sure to scroll all the way to the right and make sure your external speakers are muted. There maybe other things but you can fiddle with it once you get the basics.

BTW - Searching here and on the wiki for "alsamixer" should provide lots more suggestions.

Well that ain't good. Sounds like your onboard sound stuff isn't getting recognized. Try this and post the results:
Code:
lspci | grep -i multimedia

OK, the audio definitely isn't being detected. You may have some luck running alsaconf. Also take a look through the dmesg and messages logs http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CheckingLogFiles to see if there is anything interesting that looks like the audio device (outside of the TV tuner). You might also try running:
Code:
modprobe snd-intel8x0

But I don't hold out much hope if it doesn't see the device. Is the onboard sound enabled in your BIOS?

OK When I run alsaconf it found two cards
hda-intel 0000:00:1b.0 0403:Intel Corp. 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6
and legacy Probe legacy ISA (non-PnP chip

I choose the Intel card and say yes to modyfy /etc/modprobe.d/sound
It say sound driver is configured and will prepare the card for playing now

I then got
Running update-modules...
Loading driver...
Setting default volumes...
Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.
/usr/sbin/alsactl: get_control:185: Cannot read control info '2,0,0,Front Playback Volume,0': I nvalid argument

what is wrong here

No idea, why not try the other one.

I suspect that you're going to have to visit the alsa web sites and mailing list archives and search for info on your chipset.
