I'm running into a slight problem with my MythTV box that I though was just a fluke, but apparently is not.

For some reason, during boot, the network card is not detected when it needs to be. When the network init scripts run, they give me an error message to the effect of eth0 not found. Way later in the boot (maybe 5 seconds before X starts), I see the kernel messages about the NIC scroll by, and if I open a terminal after the system is booted, dhcpcd runs just fine, and all is well.

I know there has to be a config file somewhere that I can add a line to forcing the kernel to load the driver sooner, but I don't know where it is. I'm not really a Linux user. If this was *BSD, I'd be able to do it myself.

As far as the hardware goes, the motherboard is a PC Chips M-871G. Northbridge is an SiS 760 GX, southbridge is an SiS 964, and the ethernet controller is an SiS 900.

I'd post a clip from dmesg, but it doesn't look like there's any useful info in there.

try adding the modulename to /etc/modules file.

I think the modulename is just sis900, but it's been a while since I used that NIC.

Ah ha. I think that's what I was looking for. I'll give it a try, but due to concurrent marathons, I have a feeling my system is going to be running solid through some time Sunday, so I can't reboot it until then.

Thanks.

You don't need to reboot for this...

I meant I have to wait to reboot so I can see that it worked.

Not really.
modprobe sis900
netcardconfig
If all workes well,
echo sis900 >> /etc/modules

Rebooting is for adding new hardware or installing the next release...
