Can anyone tell me how channel updates are scheduled? I had assumed mythfilldatabase or something similar would be run out of cron.daily or perhaps the mythtv user's crontab, but I can't find any such cron jobs in those places. I checked in the frontend setup, and channel updates are scheduled there either.

Thanks
Zach

In the GUI go to: Utilities / Setup -> Setup -> General -> 7th screen

If you haven't taken a tour of the setup screens to learn what is in there yet, now would be a good time. ;-)

Thanks for the suggestion.

As mentioned in my original post, I checked there, and updates aren't scheduled to run from there either. After your post I double checked just to be sure, and no dice.

I've been running knoppmyth for about a year, so I've definitely taken a tour or two of the setup screens during that time.

At any rate, the channel updates are running somehow, but I can't figure out what is kicking them off, since (as explained in orig. post) it isn't configured in the setup area, and there aren't any cron jobs that I'm able to find.

For reference, I'm running R5A16.

Thanks!

I'm also on R5A16. To my knowlegde you only can define a time-window to automatically run mythfilldatabase. Its kicked of by MythTV itself 'by chance' within this window. My experience is that mythfilldatabase won't run when the box has to do other things like recording or watching TV or even transcoding / commflagging. You can run mythfilldatabase at fixed time, in that case you can create a cron job. In that case you may disable 'run mythfilldatabase automatically' somewhere in the setup. I'm using this setup because I'm running my grabber on a remote server, mythfilldatabase is set to use the XMLTV output as a file. This approach lets mythfilldatabase finish the job of gathering information of a few days within seconds.

That is how you're supposed to shedule them. if you don't have an entry there add one and delete the mythtv-backend file from cron.daily. There is/was a sticky post about this. Modern version alreay have this built in.

I had seen the mythtv-backend script in cron.daily, but didn't look closely at it. I hadn't realized it was responsible for the mythfilldatabase job. Thanks!
