Hi guys,
After making some small alterations to my KnoppMyth box, I've run into some problems....

I am getting these reports:

(EE) NVIDIA (0) No modes for display device TV-0
(EE) NVIDIA (0) Aborting
(EE) SCreen(s) found but non has usable configuration

-Taken from the end of: var/logXFree86.0.log

Basically the graphics frontend wont start on my TV. It used to start, but now it says there are no usable modes for my TV.

I brought it into my office and I could get into it and it worked using my pc monitor, no problem. I had to change the XF86Config-4 back to the standard one, because the modified one I was using was the XF86Config-4.Nvidia-sample one.

I had made the following changes to the nvidia sample:

changed NTSC to PAL-I

changed vert refresh from 60 to 50 (as it should be in PAL land)

I also added 1024x764 to the screen resolution coz I've loads of space around the tv picture but only after it didn't work with 800x600

The only other things I've dont this KnoppMyth box recently were: stuffed up an upgrade to R5A30, which led to a rebuld with '26 as I had a duff burn of 30.

Just before this happened I modified /etc/init.dbootmisc.sh to include the Optimize Hard Drive Performance" as shown on the wiki (had done this on previous build and no problem)
And altered the recording profiles to the dvb standars of 720x576

So I'm back to the modified XF86Config-4 file based on the Nvidia sample and still no luck.

Thing is, these mods to the XF86Config-4 file are EXACTLY the same as the ones that previously worked.

My KnoppMyth box is:
R5A26
AMD Sempron 2600
Nvidia geforce 2 400mx
Abit NF7 (onboard sound)
512 Geil ram
NovaT cards x 2
Samsun SpinPoint 200g hdd

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

btw outputting via svideo to a scart which accepts svideo inpur

No one?

Looks like this mean I'm going to have to do a fresh install of KnoppMyth.

Darn. I had a few TV show's I had recorded which I havent' watched.
Anyhow, I've not downloaded R5A30.1 yet, so if anyone has any suggestions, let me know in the next 8 hours.
Thanks in advance

Why not do an auto-upgrade? You shouldn't loose your recordings then. Just make sure you do a backup first (in the KnoppMyth menu)

PS recording profiles do not change anything if you are recording DVB. The transcoding profiles will, but they are different.

Mmm, I'll try the upgrade. Have to do it tonight. Hopefully I'll be able to sort it.

Did you type 'TV' after booting the Knoppmyth-CD during first install and rebuild of R5A26? (I guess so...)

I did type tv. I've just replaced my XF86Config-4 with my back up... and Hey Presto: back in full colour.

So, what gives, don't I need to use an altered XF86Config-4 based on the nVidia sample?

I guess that (part of) this is what is in your config file:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "Monitor0"
        Option  "DPMS"  "true"
        Option  "TVStandard" "PAL-G"
        Option  "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"
        Option  "TVOutFormat" "COMPOSITE"
        Option  "NoLogo" "1"
        Option  "TVOverScan" "0.8"
        VendorName      "KDS"
        ModelName       "KDS1983"
        HorizSync 30 - 50 # DDC-probed
        VertRefresh 60 # DDC-probed

svideo instead of composite...

I found this in both files, the original and the nvidia sample:

Code:
Section "Device"
        ### Available Driver options are:-
# sw_cursor is needed for some ati and radeon cards
Option "sw_cursor"
        #Option     "hw_cursor"
        #Option     "NoAccel"
        #Option     "ShowCache"
        #Option     "ShadowFB"
        #Option     "UseFBDev"
        #Option     "Rotate"
        Identifier  "Card0"
[color=red]# The following line is auto-generated by KNOPPIX mkxf86config
        Driver      "nvidia"
        VendorName  "All"
        BoardName   "All"
#       BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"[/color]
EndSection

I guess that you won't need an alteredXF86Config based on XG86Config-4.nvidia.sample file.

Just reading back your first post: did you try to get rid of your black borders using the overscan option? I've read a post using 0.6 at this point in order to get rid of black borders.

I've not tried to use the overscan feature, is using 0.6 much better than 0.8?
I would've thought that'd make it worse... I can but try.
The only other option is try to work out the exact modeline for my TV... I saw a thread about that a while ago followed it, but it made no sense to me then.

I'll have a quick search, see if i can turn anything up...

I just swapped out my Geforce2 MX 400 and put in a Geforce FX 5200 and battled with the overscan thing. Changing the overscan in XF86Config-4 didn't seem to do anything. I also had about 20 different modelines that I had googled ("modeline 720x576") and none of them seemed to make a difference. I then ran nvidia-settings and saw that there was an overscan adjustment on the gui. That worked a treat in real time. Using the test_pattern that i wrote (which is on the wiki) enabled me to set things up fairly well although things looked a little fatter than they should (which I fixed with the overscan settings in mythtv playback settings).

Oops. I just saw you had a Geforce2 card anyway. Look at this for help with the overscan : http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=TVOverScanHowto

My best advice on this count is don't try to use the overscan setting in your XF86Config-4, use the one in nvidia-settings instead. It works better and is easier to get right.

Unless you have a card older than a geforce4 in which case, nvidia-settings wont have the option. That's when you need nvtv.

Well, I've not managed to sort out my resolution problems, and in the process uncovered some othe 'issues'.
I don't seem to be able to run 'nvtv', because whenever I do I get a report of segmentations (don't know what that means, but it won't do anything else.)

I did that logged on as root.

I don't seem to be able to get an X-term window up and running, nor can I start the GUI once I've sxcaped out of the Myth GUI.

I'm still getting black bars down the side of the image: but it is obviously related to the graphics card not producing a wide enough picture. I'm currently on 800x600 resolution.

I still don't seem to be able to get the XF86Config-4 to work when using the modified nvidia sample. System just won't start the GUI. (Same errors as in earlier post, above.) Whereas , the modes produced when using the TV command at installation boot does.

I've now upgraded to R5A30.1 and the silver remote still doesn't appear to be working properly either....

So still a bit to do....

Do you mean "segmentation fault"? (Accurate error reporting is the difference between getting a relevant response and a guess...) If so, then it's barfing violently with an out of bounds memory access (attempting to access a segment of memory it doesn't own). That probably indicates something else is FUBAR. Did you use the "testcd" option to make sure your CD was valid?

nvtv segfaults when you run it as root because it can't open the mythtv's X display. Run nvtvd as root and try running nvtv as the mythtv user.

Not sure what you mean by cant get an xterm. Have you tried alt-x?

Hi,
Perhaps my error reporting was slightly vague... (Sorry for that tjc, unfortunately I can't check now as I'm recording stuff.)

I'll try the 'testcd' - I should've done, but I did check the ISO checksum and verified the burn I did of the disc when I burnt it, so I assumed it was ok. But I should just make sure. When the Mythbox isn't in use...

Greg, thanks for the pointer on alt-x, I'll try that later. (Previously I had been exiting the MythTV GUI by pressing escape, and saying yes to exiting. I would then have that pretty pricture of (I assume) Cecil and someone else shaking hands on a TV screen, then rightclicking going to the menu to the X-term line and choosing x-Term from the popup list. This used to produce an x-term window. It doesn't now.)

From what I recall, I tried running both nvtv and nvtvd at root and neither did very much.

I'll get back to you all when I've had a chance to 'have a fiddle'...

Thanks for pushing in the right direction.
