Well...for some reason my post on this topic was deleted from the installation section, even though it really seemed like an installation issue, but whatever. Overmoderation is the micromanagement of the internet!

Anyways, here it is again:

I did a fresh install of KnoppMyth today, added a KDE via synaptic just so I could get on the internet and copy files graphically and the such, and I am having major head aches trying to get firewire working.

Before this, I had this box (specs in my signature) loaded with windows xp and the 6200 STB was using a driver for a panasonic D-VHS deck (it worked, but with no way to change the channel) and shows were scheduled with something called DCT-RecordApp, and playback was with VLC or MediaPlayer classic. I got sick of this so I wanted something central that did it all, and was easy enough for one of my family members to use.

Anyhow, I had to build libraw1394 and libiec61883 from source (not all of the testing tools were included with knoppmyth), and by following this guide: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/printer-frie ... out=closed I was able to get HDTV to record and playback fine using mpeg2-test to capture and mplayer to playback.

I know that my 6200 is node 2 on firewire, and I can record data and change the channel (with 6200ch) from the command line, and even though mythtv should be set up properly (for firewire as a card type: FW Model:DCT6200; FW connection type: point to point; FW port: 0; Firewire Node: 2; Firewire speed: 100MBPS; Default input: MPEG2-TS), it still does the same thing. Running it from the shell, I get the following:
Code:

forever and ever, with lots of hard drive churning.

If anybody has any clue of anything I could try to make this work, I would be forever grateful. Thanks.

Ha! I've tried Myth on about 10 different distributions of linux and have yet to get the firewire working 100%. To make it work with KnoppMyth, I had to get updated versions of lib1394raw, libavc1394, and libiec, compile them from source, move them from /usr/local/lib to /usr/lib (seems to happen on all Debian based distros), compile Myth from source as a debian package, and reinstall it. Unfortunately, the performance was dismal with KnoppMyth on my hardware. It was *almost* useable on Hoary. I could not get the NVidia drivers to work properly on Mepis. I couldn't get it to work at all on Fedora 3 and 4, as with most other distributions. I gave up for about a month, and I'm typing this out on a Breezy (ubuntu 3/5.10) pre-release box. Everything is promising thus far, except there seems to be a problem with xorg that takes ~ 25% of the CPU whenever anything video intensive is happening on the system (I didn't have that on any other distro, so I'll guess its either something wrong with xorg, or there are unset options I should have in xorg.conf that tax the CPU), causing prebuffering pauses and dropouts in audio. For this to work, I had to do the same thing I mentioned earlier about KnoppMyth, but Breezy comes with pretty new MythTV packages in its universe (0.18.1-5 I think) and it is already set up...except...I get this same exact error unless I kill the mythbackend daemon that starts when the system starts and restart it as root in a terminal. Strange.

strange I had to do absolutely none of that on a stock R5A16 install using the onboard firewire from an abit AS8. Just had to make sure the proper modules got loaded and add firewire capture device in mythtv-setup.

Well a post like that can't get any good response. Like I said on my hardware everything has been working "out of the box" since R5A16 you'll at the very least need to tell us what firewire card you have.

the FW card has VIA chipset. I was able to record over the FW, but results are inconsistent.
Sometimes I get that error posted here:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... s+firewire

It seems that whenever I start the backend manually from the command line,
I can't start the the frontend (get the connection error described in this thread).

Another question: are you supposed to see live TV over the FireWire or just a recordings? I could do it without any problem on Windows with DCT-RecordApp and VLC player.

Mine works fine for recordings or livetv. Works just like any other tuner does, never had a problem with it.

I saw this one pop up from a long time ago. I haven't messed with the box I was originally asking about (shuttle SKG43) in a while, but I need to load it up for my pops soon, so I'll have to make sure what I did on my box works on that one.

Anyhow, I hadn't tried knoppmyth since this issue until R5A22 came out (this problem was on R5A16), and when I loaded it on my current box (Athlon 64 3200 939 pin, el cheapo ALI gigabyte motherboard, FX5200 ultra video, SB audigy firewire, DCT6200), I still had problems with inconistancy in grabbing video from firewire (it would work 1/5 times or so), but I didn't have that problem again listed above.

Once I switched the firewire setting to broadcast from p2p, I pick up the video every time, and that Athlon with the geforce5 card makes HDTV work wonderfully.

I can honestly say that I solved this problem.

1) Changed Firewire setting from P2P to Broadcast.
2) Changed Firewire setting to Port 0 and Node 0.
3) Started mythbackend, started mythfrontend, Watch TV worked fine.

Since my threads, old and new, seem to be bubbling towards the top, I'll update this one again.

On my last set up (as of last week), everything worked perfectly with the DCT6200/firewire tuner set up. I was using the firewire from a Sound Blaster Audigy card, a crappy ULi gigabyte 939 pin motherboard, and either a GeForce 5200FX ultra card, or later, a GeForce 6600 agp card w/256 MB of RAM.

Setting the firewire to broadcast made everything happy and it would never drop the TS stream.

However, on my dad's myth box I built for him, a Shuttle SKG43/Via chipset/Athlon XP 2800+, 460 GB of drive space, and the GeForce 5200 card listed above, it would hit the TS stream from the cable box (DCT6208) once out of every ten with point to point or broadcast set up, and otherwise garble out what is above. I have two different firewire cards I can try in place of his crippled onboard one - the SB live card that I know works like a damn charm, and an NEC based one as well that is just firewire...I guess he'll have to lose his second tuner, but oh well for him.

BTW, Athlon XP 2800+ and GeForce5200FX ultra were definitely enough horsepower to drive full 1080i, and to deinterlace it as well, with no hickups. I will work on this box after I get my jam set up.
