I'm wondering if it will work with R5A26, or if it's likely to be tricky. I am helping a friend set up a new system which uses the ASUS Vintage-AE1 motherboard/case, and it has the SIS190 ethernet controller. He seems to be having some difficulty getting Ethernet going, but I'm not sure if it's something he did, or what.

EDIT: We are also having problems getting UDMA working on the hard drive. :-(

Any experiences with this chipset, or a similar one, would be appreciated...

we are getting something like the following:

Code:
SIS5513: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:02.5
SIS5513: chipset revision 1
SIS5513: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
SIS5513: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:02.5
SIS5513: chipset revision 1
SIS5513: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
SIS_IDE: probe of 0000:00:02.5 failed with error -1
Probing IDE interface ide0...
hda: ST3200826A, ATA DISK drive

I may have found a solution, which we will give a shot tomorrow (I don't know enough about this to try on my own :D ...)

http://kerneltrap.org/node/4925

Hopefully this will fix the no-DMA issue for the hard drive... the ethernet we can live with by using a card (though would be nice to have the slot back), but the DMA is a show stopper.

We'll post back if this works or not.

Thanks for all the help Mark!!!

-Steve

We were able to re-compile the kernel using the tip Steve mentioned above. This site has the details:

http://kerneltrap.org/node/4925

It worked, and we can now use ATA devices in DMA. We still don't have on-board ethernet, so are using an Intel Ethernet PCI card.

The box is now working. Hooray!

(Although I wish we hadn't had to give up the PCI slot)

Just wanted to update the thread that I am still having some stability issues with this box. We are kind of suspecting hardware (maybe power supply) at the moment.

Once I get it all stabilized, I'll post a follow up with more info on the hardware and software settings we used.

FYI: We're still having a LOT of stability problems with this box (crashing anywhere from once per day to once per three days). We may try moving to newer install of knoppmyth at some point. We're currently on R5A26.

If anyone has any ideas, or has any experience with the SiS760GX chipset, please let us know.
