Well depending on what you want to convert to, nuvexport might be what you need.

Have a look at man nuvexport. Also look at /etc/nuvexportrc.

If you are needing to export to mpeg2, and you are using a hardware mpeg2-encoding capture card like the Hauppauge PVR-250, then you already have mpeg2 files. you just need to copy the appropriate nuv file to a location of your choice and give it a meaningful name.

nuvexport conveniently interacts with the mysql database to extract show titles, etc. then it configures the ffmpeg (or transcode) command line options for you.

For more flexibility, you can use ffmpeg or transcode directly. See their respective manpages.

How to cut "commercials"

When you want to cut out the commercials, play back the recording and hit e on the keyboard to enter the "edit recording" mode. This will allow you to flag the commercials. A search for cutlist should yield a lot of info.

This can also be done via the remote. On my mceusb remote, there is a program guide button that gives me a menu--while in playback mode.

When you export the files with nuvexport (and possibly other packages too), there is an option for "Enabling Myth Cutlist". This option allows you to transcode & cut out the commercials.
