Yes. Share the folder on Windows and use smbfs to mount the share. Since I don't use Windows I cannot give you precise instructions on doing this...

mount -t smbfs //windowbox/share-folder /myth/music

this is from the command line....

if you want to have it auto mount

add the following line to /etc/fstab
//windowbox/share-folder /myth/music smbfs password= 0 0

(this is all assuming you have a window share that is open to everyone [no password])

you can also google for samba client and see how to mount XP shares

Note to the above... You'll probably want to mount it undet /myth/music. Somewhere like /myth/music/winbox

Thank you all for your response. I did google it and came up wit a pretty good site.

http://julien.herbin.ecranbleu.org/howt ... howto.html

Couple things you wanna be sure you do is if you have a firewall (i.e. Windows firewall in SP2 or higher) make sure your port is open for samba, I think 445 is default. I ended up using a GUI called Lin Neighborhood.

I tried doing this to share some video files off of my win2k box. The results were not very good. The smb connection was too slow to play anything smoothly. Anyone with diffrent results or suggestions?

That shouldn't be, i do the same thing, and it runs fine from my win2k box. You might want to try updating your samba and smbfs using the apt-get command.

The only thing I can think is if either end is on 802.11b wireless you will not be able to do it as that is just not enough bandwith, but if you are on anything faster I'm not sure why it's not working for you.

Anybody else having a problem with network sharing with SP2 Final. Its funny cause I didnt have a problem with a beta SP2 and now I cant connect any computer to my XP box. I have tried all of the following.

-Disable simple file sharing
-Disable port Firewall
-Opened port 445 TCP

None of which worked and now i cant use my net share for mythmusic

Not sure how related that is, but when I updated my W2k boxes to SP4, suddenly Samba connections failed. Searching around and talking to people pointed me to a change MS did in their networking, that breaks Samba. Upgrading to a new Samba(either 3.x, or a new 2.x) should cure that. I will try that myself in the next days.

Just a random thought here, but did you happen to install your final version of SP2 on top of your system that was formerly running a beta of SP2?

My boss tried that at my work, and his machine never quite worked right after that. Most things seemed normal, but he had weird networking issues, such as program called "Remote Anything" no longer finding systems it was supposed to be able to remote control.

He ended up having to reformat and reinstall XP, followed by the final SP2 release, to get everything working properly again.
