don't know, but much of the information is probably available via google cache.

This happened at the end of January too, although not as early in the month. Looks like it's a victim of it's own success.

Yeah, I'll probably let it ride at this point. I've only got a couple of months left on the plan at the host, and I hate to upgrade it at this point, but I'll up it some when I renew or find another host or whatever I decide to do. The thing that sucks is it's like three hosts that have used all the bandwith. I block them as I see them, but a couple of times a month someone pulls 1/2 a gig in one day from one host which is crazy since there's only like 75Mb total data on the site.

Is there someway to DL limit on a per host basis? Obviously this would require something like a DB table of IP addresses and DLs, and even that might not work for clients with dynamic addresses... Is is just the normal content or is someone using the site as a mailbox or the like?

I haven't really figured out what it is. The reporting is not that great. There is no indication of foul play, my best guess at this point is someone with something set to continual refresh or something like that. Admittedly I have a very low bandwith limit right now, which I will upgrade upon renewal.

Sounds like this problem is recent...

foul play? I don't have any idea what this could be.

How about we take steps to stop other greedy users just in case.. I'm no super-duper expert, but let's start with blocking prefetching by fasterfox. This is not necessary to have & is very easy to do. Here is a quote from the FAQ on fasterfox's site

Because some websites may not have the resources available to support the enhanced prefetching feature, it may be easily blocked by webmasters.

Prior to generating any prefetching requests, Fasterfox checks for a file named "robots.txt" in your site's root directory (subdirectories are not checked). If this file contains the following 2 lines, no prefetching requests will be made to your domain:

User-agent: Fasterfox
Disallow: /

I can think of at least a half dozen scenarios from a simple DOS attack, right up to someone using the wiki as a "drop" or "mailbox". Granted a lazy/selfish/ignorant dumbass user is the more likely scenario, but unless you've spent the last decade or two as a hermit with no access to the news or the net the other possibilities should be obvious.

Thanks for the fasterfox reference. I already had a robots.txt to keep a few script dir etc from being indexed, so I've added the fasterfox lines. As for the foul play I can think of a couple of things as well, but I don't think a drop box is it since all the traffic in each case came from only one address, and a drop box would generally generate traffic from many addresses. I make no claim to be a world class webmaster, but I've looked through a few things with the limited reporting I have and nothing really looks fishy, that's why I'm thinking auto refresh or something. I know IE has a setting somewhere that will make it constantly refresh, because I know a few people who have been banned from slashdot for accidentally turning it on. At any rate I'm looking at some hosts now that have considerably larger bandwith limits. I was hoping to be able to mirror the releases, but I don't think I'll be able to squeeze that into the budget, though I've found one where I might be able to host it for a short time after release to ease the load and pull it when the limit approaches. Those terabyte bandwith limits are just a bit too rich for my blood. :D

Hey Xsecrets, if you need help hosting the site let me know. I can provide more than enough bandwidth. I also host ipodlinux.org. My friend and I don't believe that GPL projects should have to pay for hosting. Unless you're in the terrabyte range of bandwidth usage. But we could work something out.

It's not that much, but I'm looking at a hosting plan where I can put a couple of other sites, and going to get enough bandwith that I can mirror releases on occasion. I'll have something long before I hit my limit next month. I think I've already found the host I'm going to use. Right this second I'm on an ultra cheap plan and only have 3Gb/month which is what I've hit the last few months.

Put up a PayPal link and I'll contribute to the wiki's expenses.

Xsecrets, I could give you 500G of bandwidth if you need it. Don't spend your personal money on it. I work with a hosting company and we have unused bandwidth every month.
