I have been running KnoppMyth for 5 months without too many problems. I anxiously awaiting the latest upgrade. I have not upgrade since my initial install (R5 A16). I had to tweak my ivtv install and I have enabled tftp for my mediamvp. Will I have to redo that when I do an auto-upgrade? How about myth2ipod or NFS shares? I was thinking about doing a test auto-upgrade to Release 5A30.2.

Any custom changes you made will be lost.

I recommend making an extra tarball or tarballs after you do the backup which includes all of /etc, /home and /root. The intent is not that you restore from these but that they'll be there for reference on things like miniserver.conf, hosts, config files for the pieces you added, ... I also recommend trying to write down all the tweaks you can remember before you start and looking for files newer than the .epoch datestamps with find. Between the two you should get pretty close to a full list.

I set up a second instance of lircd for lircd-xmit for my serial ir transmitter. Will that be impacted?

Most likely. Save the config files you tweaked for reference.

I've always done this myself and it has come in handy more than once. I hartily second this suggestion. In addition, if you've put any extra themes in the themes directory back those up. Myth won't start if it can't find it's theme, and you can't tell it to use a different them if you can't get it to start. Also any channel changing script you may be using should also be backed up.
In addition, immediately before jumping into an upgrade, I hook up a second hard drive (external usb is ideal for this) and use partimage from a knoppix disc to create an image of hda1. This makes for quick egress if you get an hour or so into the upgrade and realize things aren't going smoothly or won't be ready in time for your favorate show. Don't foget to backup hda's boot sector as well!

Only partly true, there are several posts in the forums that tell you how to do this from the command line using mysql. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8603&highlight=mysql+theme

I think at one point someone even posted a script that would list the available themes and let you choose one from the commnd line...

I had done the same thing and was dreading having to do it again (which is why my box was stuck at r4v4). I finally bit the bullet and did it (saving my entire /etc tree beforehand to another partition). Setting up an irblaster is a heck of a lot easier now! If I hadn't forgotten that I had moved my blaster from COM1 to COM2, it would have been close to trivial.

So don't let that stop you from upgrading if you want to.

Is there a new doc to explain it or did you just resotre your tar file of /etc? Please share the trivial details. I'd like to upgrade. :)

That would be a bad idea, since it would step on changes thet the install process is trying to make. You need to restore things selectively which means making a list of the things that you need or have changed. In the past when i didn't have a good handle on this information I've gone so far as to unpack the full backup of /etc in another directory and do a diff -r across the two trees.

Well, the updated myth2ipod, with the installer script will do everything for you, and works right out of the box when the new version is released.
NFS shares... Cecil has setup /myth out of the box. Just start the service and you are set. The wiki is your friend.

Get NFS running was easy, but I forgot the /etc/exports !! I have a few that I forgot about, some set up for an xbox, a mediamvp, and an 3com audrey. The trick was that I have some of the video and music ones shared one level down for kids music and kids videos.

I did the upgrade last night the intial update was quick I was finished in less than a half an hour.

To get it back to what I had before took another 2 hours.

I had to recreate my /etc/exports/

Unlock the .htaccess for mythweb

I installed some more webmin modules... NFS and DHCP (really helped me getting the mediamvp stuff straighten out before)

I had tar'd my tftpboot directory (thanks for the tip) and grabbed the etc/dhcpd and dhcpd3 plus the inetd.conf which I was able to get the mediamvp up and running.

Bonus after upgrading...

Fixed the video out on my server/shuttle
Have LIRC working on my ATI remote
Retro theme

Problem with mythburn, I had tried to install prior to upgrading and believe that it did not get upgraded fully when I upgraded KnoppMyth.

I considered this a trial run for when I upgrade mythtv .19 Ithink i will try to delete mythburn and hope that it gets installed next time. :)
