Hi friends:

Well, as I struggle squashing one bug at a time, I've noticed that I can't
burn DVDs from within Myth in R5A22. (I guess that means NUV2DISC?)

When I click the "Create DVD" button, the button press shows, and
nothing happens-it stays on the same KnoppMyth screen. I did a search
for this subject, and came across a post somewhere on these forums, but
lost it. :(

The funny thing is, I had it working, or at least I could get to the
"Create DVD " menus a while back, so something must've changed. The
only thing I can think of is that I added the /dev/dvd mount stuff to
/etc/fstab so that I could rip and play DVDs properly. The latter two
functions work fine, BTW.

Can someone point me to where this semi Linux newbie should be
starting to investigate?

Thanks

Shplad

Okay, well I've figured out at least some of it.

I didn't have nuv2disc installed yet. I just assumed it was installed, since
I'd read so many posts which suggested that in R5A22 it should already be
installed. Well, it wasn't. I installed it, and now I have Create DVD menus,
but after I choose the files to burn, I get "ERROR". That's it, nothing more
specific.

I hope I didn't screw things up.

I ran
Code:
nuv2disc-install.sh -download

without installing anything else. Somehwere, though, I read about some
muxer scripts to run. Does anyone know what to do next?

Okay, can someone at least tell me how to figure out which packages and
software were installed or not installed successfully for NUV2DISC?

I'm not lazy, just thinking if I go to check for all the dependencies listed for
nuv2disc install in Aptitude, it could take an hour or two.

Is there any other direction for me to go on this? Is there a way I could start
install for nuv2disc all over again?

Cecil, can you point me anywhere at all with this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Shplad.

You may be aware that r5a22 had some weirdness involving SVN version of mythtv. To quote Cecil's announcement:
Quote:
11/08/05
Please don't use R5A22. If you are doing a new install, please use R5A16. I accidently included a SVN version of MythTV in R5A22. According to Isaac, there is "no guarantee" this will smoothly upgrade to 0.19. If you are using R5A22, we are working on a way to safely revert MythTV to 0.18.2. My humble apologoies for the mix up.

Personally, I'd use the current (r5a30.2?) version or wait for the next major stable upgrade (maybe r5a40?). If you must stick with r5a22, take a look at this thread:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6615&highlight=
(My entries read kind of like a diary. Sorry.)

You'll see that my last entry on the subject was 10/28/2005. Can't be sure if my change to "/etc/apt/sources.list" is still valid (use with caution). I had hoped to try some of the fixes suggested subsequently in the thread, but myth is just too handy. In my current setup, Mythburn works from the web interface. Nuvexport still ng. I think the other posters in the thread either reverted to r5a16 or moved on to a newer release. Good luck!

Thanks, but...why does everyone keep recommending upgrades. I really
don't think the answer to software problems should continously be "just
upgrade to XYZ version". I'm already on my 3rd version of KnoppMyth.
I've finally got almost everything major working properly. I'm sure you
can imagine how long it will take a Linux newbie to start all over again,
reinstall, get all the settings right, and then fix the bugs in the NEW
version. I'll switch if I have to, but it won't impress me to have to switch 3
times in under a year.

Brad,

Suggesting an upgrade or new install is intended to save your time and/or your sanity. You COULD revert to r5a16, but why go backwards? It's your choice. Bear in mind that this application is evolving (and improving) rapidly. In fact, it's an evolving application composed of numerous software components that are also evolving (and improving) rapidly, thus we have an accelerated upgrade cycle compared to commercial software. As with any upgrade, I can only decide for myself if the risk is worthwhile - if things are working fine for me, maybe I shouldn't f* with it. My choice/my risk - remember that the "a" in r5a22 stands for "alpha".

In hindsight, I had full functionality with r5a16 so I should have passed on r5a22, but I wanted the latest nvidia drivers. I eventually solved my mythburn issue before Cecil published the warning. I'm a programmer, so it almost qualified as "fun" in my weird universe. If you buy into the concept of open source, sharing the solution is the spirit of this whole exercise. Maybe someone learns from my post or someone posts a better suggestion. In this case, R5A22 seems to have been unintentionally built with a less-stable version of the mythtv source. We both know from experience that it doesn't play nice with nuv2disc/nuvexport/mythburn out of the box, and Cecil's warning of 11/08 says DON'T USE R5A22. Clear enough?

If you've read my partial, flawed "solution", you've seen that it isn't trivial. And in the end, nuvexport and nuv2disc remained non-functional on my system. If you try it, you'll be living on the command prompt, running apt-get and make install, changing permissions, adding users to groups, etc., but who am I to deny you my kind of fun? That's why I suggested upgrade/install but provided the link to the thread. If you have critical recordings that MUST be saved to DVD, then tinkering with r5a22 is the way to go. If not, do a new install of the latest stable version. Keep good notes on what you did to make it work and post the steps to the Tier 1 or Tier 2 forum as appropriate. That's how this is supposed to work.

I expect that mythburn and nuvexport are better behaved in r5a26 and later. Some time soon, when time permits, I'll burn off my must-save recordings to DVD, hose the box, then do an upgrade or new install to an r5a3x or 4x version. Until then, it's working well enough for me that I won't be f*ing with it any time soon. Good luck!

George

George:

I hear you. I understand you. It's just very frustrating when I have most
everything else working.

Why did I install R5A22? Because I had installed it before Cecil put out his
warning. And, as you know, Cecil recommends strongly against trying to
upgrade R5A22 to newer versions.

I guess I just love the software enough that I want to be able to use it a
lot.

For now, I'm considering trying Nero for Linux to burn the DVDs, if the
Linux version does that.

Okay, so I did a bit more digging, and found the logs folder in nuv2disc.

The dvdstatus log reads:

Code:

DONE -Processing File- 02/16 04:40:32 PM

this is the dvdstring 02/16 04:40:32 PM
Starting DVDwizard 02/16 04:40:32 PM
DONE -Creating dvd layout- 02/16 04:40:32 PM
Finished DVDwizard with Error 02/16 04:40:33 PM

DVD - USING DVD mode for nuvexport 03/05 10:28:51 PM

Should this tell me anything?

Thanks

"this is the dvdstring 02/16 04:40:32 PM"

This tells me that no files were selected for recording to a dvd.
Make sure the files you want are moved to the second box underneath the selection box.

Jams:

Hey great, I didn't know you visited these forums. First off, let me say
thanks for making something like this. It's particularly great for Linux
newbies like me. Otherwise, DVD burning would be a bit of a nightmare
for me.

I somehow guessed that the lockfile needed to be deleted. So I did that.
After that, I could select files, but a few things didn't seem to work right.

First, it seemed to do whatever transcoding/conversion was necessary in a
few minutes, rather than hours. Is that normal when you're using mpeg2
files from Hauppauge PVR150 cards? Then, according to the messages, it
seemed to go through the process, and write the DVD. But when I tried to
play the DVD, there was no .VOB file on the disc. Can you help?

Also, on another try, I tried to select a custom picture for the background.
Every time I tried, it would display the picture (in Xine, I guess) and I
couldn't see anything else on the screen. I couldn't even select any other
menus, because my custom graphic was taking up the whole screen. I ran
top, and noticed xine was running, and killed it. That revealed the "Select
the Background for the DVD Menu" screen again. What's wrong there, any
idea?

Thanks again

Did the preview button work?

Nothing is wrong, xine pops up to show you what the background will look like. All you need todo is hit the xine exit button on your remote. If you liked the background just move to the next screen.

Instead of using xine I wanted to make the background change according to your selection, but that didnt' work out.

Okay, well the next attempt at burning was mostly a succes, but for some
strange reason, I had to enable menus-that seemed to do the trick.

I still had a couple of problems, though. First, when I tried to preview my
own custom background image, nuv2disc insisted on displaying a graphic
that I don't even have on my hard drive any more. It didn't matter which
custom image I chose-it always displayed the same, non-existent image.

Second, when I tried to work around that by choosing the default
background, it put it on the DVD, but upside down. Any suggestions?

Thanks again Jams for all your hard work and dedication to helping us
newbies.
