that's going to be normal with a v4l card like the pinnacle. you can get it much lower using a pvr hardware based card and xvmc.

Thank you for your reply.

But if I see the tv with xawt the cpu usage is 0.3%......

This means the mythtv require that cpu usage (backend <---> frontend)?

To reiterate, EPIA boards work best using cards that have mpeg-2 hardware encoding. My M1000 works great playing mpeg-2 files from my backend with a cpu utilization < 20%. The key to low cpu utilization is to take advantage of the mpeg-2 acceleration built into the EPIA video chipset by enabling xvmc. Mpeg-4 files will require much higher cpu usage to decode the video when playing back on the TV.

If the Pinnacle card is your only option for the time, try lowering the recording resolution and bitrate. Try starting at a small size and bitrate and work your way up to something that doesn't max out the CPU. I think I was able to get 640x480 at 3500kbps to playback smoothly when I was using mpeg-4 recordings.

xawtv doesn't do anything but dump the video to the screen whereas mythtv encodes the video writes it to disk, and then decodes the video. xawtv will never have pause livetv functionality.
