Are there any tweaks that can be done to enhance the CD ripping speed?

Having tried it, I found that with default settings (high quality, Ogg vorbis) it takes about 5 mins per track which is almost an hour per CD. My drive is a DVD-RW CD-RW 48x. I only have about 20 megs of free space on / but plenty in /mythtv etc, so I don't know if this can affect the performance in any way..

Thanks.

How fast is your CPU? This will likely make the biggest difference to this. Encoding (and/or transcoding) is computationally intensive. Of course if you have other stuff going on at the same time (transcoding, comflagging etc)...

20M free in / is not healthy, could fill up anytime and crash the box, I'd check log files etc to see what you can clear out.

My CPU is a 2.4 GHz P4, and I have 512MB RAM. So it shouldn't be a performance issue unless the near-full / is somehow hindering the performance. But I assume DVD and CD drives should generally work at full speed straight away in KnoppMyth without any additional tweaks etc?

Audio extraction never, ever, runs at the max rated speed of the drive. I think 8x-16x is the typical max extract speed on CD/CD-R/CD-RW drives. DVD-Rx drives tend to be a level slower (4x-8x) max audio extract speed.

Still, you're seeing about 1x extract speed, so there's definitely a problem. Perhaps the parameters passed are telling the drive to work in a very conservative extraction mode.
