I'm contemplating trading in my HD-5000 for a Dvico Fusion HDTV 5 Gold. Before I do, I want to make sure there are not any gotchas I should know about.

From what I understand the Dvico cards have been supported for much longer under knoppmyth. Can the analog tuner be used under knoppmyth? Can the mpeg encoder be used for real time transcoding of hdtv streams? My guess is not.

Thanks for any input?

mike

Why are you considering changing? They use the same lgdt3303 tuner. They use different bridge interfaces with the hd5000 using flexcop and the fusion 5 gold, the cx23882. According to http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/ATSC_cards, the HD5000 cannot do analog NTSC, so if that's your reason then OK, I can buy that, although a cheap analog card gets you the ability to record both analog and digital at the same time, whereas using one card with both analog and digital on it means (typically) that you can use one or the other at the same time.

What do you mean by realtime transcode? The cards tune to a frequency and present the MPEG2 stream to the software. I haven't heard of any cards that can real time take that MPEG2 stream and convert it to MPEG4. Cool beastie if such a thing exists.

The main reason is that I'm still in the experimenting phase, and the Dvico card seems to be more widely supported in other PVR applications. If I keep the HD-5000 and decide that I don't like it after a few months, I'm less likely to be able to sell it compared to the Dvico card. It is suported under MCE, and some other windows PVRs. My guess is that the average PC PVR user will be using a windows based product and that will make the Dvico cards easier to unload.

Another factor is that the remote that came with my HD-5000 is un-usable, so I'm going to have to buy a remote anyway. I think the one that will come with the Dvico card will be much better.

The analog tuner on the Dvico card is just a plus. I'm supprised to find out that I can't record an analog show and a digital show on this card simultaniously. I did know that there was only one F connector on the card, so I would not be able to record an off air digital broadcast and an analog cable broadcast.

Oppinions?
