I am running a clean install RB57 and everything works except sound. When I was running R5A22 sound worked fine.

The backend doesn't have a soundcard so i cannot test, however I tested two frontends one mac and one running off of a cd. Sound does not work on either. Live TV and Recording capture fine. (captures from DirectTV) Internal Audio is turned up all the way.

I dont see any errrors in the logs except for one

"parser not found for codec id: 94210 !"

IVTV configuration looks fine. Running 0.4.3

From searching I see that thier were some issues on the IVTV list. However I checked /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv and it looks fine. I also made sure not to have simple="

I saw references on the lists to some issue with msp3400 being in the wrong place but I cannot figure it out.

I upgraded to 0.4.4 just to see if it was a driver issue. No change.

I really doubt that this is your problem, but when I noticed that my pvr-250 sound was low in R5B7 (but not completely silent) I found that in all of my recording profiles the volume was set to 90%. I increased it to 100, and that fixed it for me. Maybe yours got set to 0 somehow?

fwiw, I also see "Parser not found for Codec Id: 94210 !" in my backend log, and nothing else in your logs jumps out at me, but I'm not an expert.

root@mythtvmasterbackend:~# ivtvctl -a
not an ivtv driver device

Should I be entering this another way?

Just to clarify I have 5 capture cards in the box.

Masterbackend

Pchdtv dvb dev/video 0
pchdtv dvb dev/video 1
Pchdtv dvb dev/video 2

PVR-250 dev/video4
PVR-250 dev/video5

I don't have a soundcard in this box.

Is it possible that msp3400 is in the wrong place. I saw this was a problem with the 350?

What other test should I run to figure this out?

I think tjc was asking you to run ivctl for each /dev/videon deivce, ie: "ivtvctl -d /dev/video4 -a"

Btw, which of your 5 capture cards have broken sound.. both 250s?

I also checked the recording profiles. It was at 90%. I turned that up all the way to 100%.

It made no difference.

I saw someone saying that digital out is set by default. Is this true. I am using an msi rs480m il. It said something about going into alsa autodetect.

For this test setup I am using the analog audio out jack for front speakers. This runs to the TV rca audio in outputs. I plugged in earphones to test but they register no audio either.

This is running of the cd for now. I have a very small old hard drive (2gig). I was going to install once the cd worked.

If I am using the cd. How would I run alsa autodetect. I tried that in the install phase with expert setup. It detected the ATI chipset. I belive it uses AC97.

Should I just try and build the HDTV box I have waiting to test. It will have an envy chipset for audio which is known to work well.

OK, dumb question # 1: Are supposed to be taking your input from the SVideo port on both PVR-250 cards? Dumb qesution #2: If so, do you have an audio cable hooked up from the video input source to the silver 1/8" stereo mini jack on each PVR-250? Dumb question #3: If you upgraded from R5A22 did you follow the directions to drop you capture card definitions and recreate them? The ivtv drivers have renumbered capture inputs a couple times since then.

Thier are no stupid questions just stupid people :) like me.

I did a clean install of Rb57.

I am capturing from DirecTV so the sound is encoded in the mpeg stream. No cables necessary afaik. It worked in R5A22.

One of us is confused, and while I'm currently short on sleep, I don't think it's me. ;-)

We are talking about the connection from the input to the capture card here. The sound is only "encoded in the mpeg stream" once the card gets it. None of the inputs to a PVR card are MPEG streams, only the captured output.

What kind of cable do you have connected from the Direct TV boxes to the PVR-250 cards?
    - Co-ax? If so, then your input connection is set wrong (see the first question above). It should be "Tuner 0" instead. Even if the DirectTV box is doing the real tuning.
    - S-Video? Then you need an audio cable.
    - Composite (yellow RCA phono)? Then you need a cable and your settings are wrong. ;-)
