My HDTV cannot properly display the bootup process of my Myth. By the time the machine completes booting, it has pulled the proper modeline from my XF86Config-4, but prior to that I get incoherent garbage.

Is there a way to setup a default modeline for the boot process? I can read the very first screen (which shows the bios logo and the system CPU/memory info). I have a modeline that allows me to display 640x480 (encapsulated in a 1080i signal)...I just need to know how to get the system to display during boot.

The bootup process isn't necessarily the most important thing, but what I really miss doing is being able to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc. to switch to a prompt. This was convenient, but looks like it uses the same modeline as the bootup process.

Why can't I set it to just use my 640x480 modeline, which works perfectly fine?

Until X starts, it doesn't know about your modeline.

You can add a resolution to your kernel boot paramaters in lilo.conf. Searching under the Install topic should find where Cecil describes how to do this.

Are you using the "author" field in the search? Try both "Cecil" and "cesman". As for keywords, try "lilo" "boot" "resolution", ... Start with a shallow scan. I remember it being a relatively short thread posted sometime since 30.2 or B7 came out. It may not have been under install as tjc suggested, so try dropping that criteria.

Both of these install instructions from the wiki include descriptions of how to do this:
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=KnoppMythR5PreviewInstall
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=KnoppMythInstall
I can't seem to find the posting either, which probably means it died in a purge of off topic postings.

I tried searching with cecil and cesman and I just can't find it. I went through those links and I don't see where it says how to change the modeline for boot. I even went back and find for modeline, and didn't come up with much.

If you're looking for "modeline" you're looking in the wrong place. "Modelines" are used only in the X environment, and that isn't even loaded until much later in the boot process.

Look instead for lines like "vga=normal", "vga=791", or even "vga=800x600" in conjunction wtih the lilo boot loader. These are the statements that will affect the resolution and refresh rate of your video before X is loaded.
