Hi,
I could use a little help to understand how the newer version of KnoppMyth / Mythtv live tv functions. It appears that any time the system is up the machine is constantly recording on the last?
What made me ponder this, is I had set for a couple of recordings for my kids for some AM cartoon network shows and then later in the evening I noticed some less than desireable content on the cartoon network (adult level, very colorful) which could be left unkowingly available for the little ones to view. That would really hurt the WAF in my house!

Is there away of disabling the "live tv" feature so you only have recorded what you want to record or view? Or am I missing the big picture?

Also seems to be wasted cpu power to have that feature while only listing to tunes.

Thanks
Mike

no it only records while you are viewing livetv. Mythtv is not "always recording" If that happened to you something screwed up.

this is the way it's supposed to work. If you watch something, or even if you channel surf over a channel it creates a recording of that, however once you exit livetv it stops and only records scheduled recordings. At least this is the way it works on my system, and the way it's supposed to work from my understanding.

also by default none of the livetv recordings should show up in the all recordings group, so you would have to go over to the livetv group to see them anyways.

Hi,

Thanks Xsecrets, I know the recordings show up in the browser but I will look a little closer and try to take better notes along the way.

I think there is a setting to keep live-tv from being shown in All programs when in the recorded programs menu.

yes there is a setting, and it was enabled on my upgrade by default, though I have heard a few people saying it was turned of on their installs, so not sure what's going on there. Though I have not heard anyone saying that it's always recording.

Sure sounds like someone left it on livetv to me. The good news is that if you turn off the option to show live in the all recordings list this shouldn't be an issue, at least from the frontend.

There's probably even some way to get it to not record anything you don't want it to, or expire it very rapidly. For example since livetv is a recording group, I think you can probably set a limit on the number of shows to keep (say like 3-4) and by 7AM anything adult would be history... A clever hack is left as an excercise for the reader. ;-)

Hi,

Interesting thoughts. I will look a little closer after I get my main box back up. A couple of filter caps had some smoke escape and we all know that when you let the smoke out, they don't work any more.

Thanks.

Yep, isn't that one of Maxwell's Laws? "Everything electrical runs on magic blue smoke. If the magic blue smoke escapes, it doesn't work any more." ;-)

That's apparently what happened to the fan controller on the motherboard of my workstation box. I'm still waiting for parts to work around that...

I have to chime in and say that yes, my box is recording everything, at least since 9:54 this morning. I run xbmcmythtv scripts on my xbox, and maybe some error there kicked the backend into gear, but the xbox has been off most of the day, and there isn't even a monitor hooked up to the backend... and yet the encoder is busy working away. hmmmm.
How quickly do livetv recordings autoexpire, by default?

I think it's one day by default. I have been running 0.19 for several weeks now and have never seen this behavior. must be something that the frontend did.

Please describe you setup in detail. You use knoppmyth for the backend and a xbox for the frontend? Maybe it is a problem with the xbox frontend. Or with remote frontends in general.
