Last week, my box died during a record. After this, nothing else recorded (entries show up in recorded programs in Mythweb, but there are no files for them).

Is this a possible database corruption issue? If so, is there an easy fix for it without a reinstall?

What do the staus screens show? Are the capture cards being seen? One reason that it might not record is if it can't find any cards to use. Have you gone back into mythtvsetup to see if the settings have gotten lost or if the cards can be opened?

How did the system "die"? Overheat? An electrical event? (BTW - If you haven't got a UPS or at least a good surge protector shame on you.)

The status screen shows very little out of the ordinary, and the capture card (PVR-150) was being seen. Trying to bring up the Recorded Programs screen was very slow... apparently there was data for recordings, but not the recordings themselves.

On the reinstall, the /etc files were restored from mythbackup (and /home), but the problem went away.

This system suffers an occasional lockup, so an UPS wouldn't have helped. Im gathering parts for a new box, but Im still short memory, hard drive, case, and northbridge heatsink (don't ask).

OK, is this one of the known lockups? Via chipset on the motherboard and DMA? Nforce2 with C1 Disconnect enabled? ...

No, this is specific to a crappy motherboard on a particular old Gateway E4600 system. Intel chipset. Im reasonably sure the problem is specific to this particular machine.
