I'm using a Westinghouse 19w3 LCD TV through its D-sub input (WSXGA+ 1440x900 resolution) and while XFree uses a 1440x900 modeline (provided by http://koala.ilog.fr/cgi-bin/nph-colas-modelines), there are 20-30 pixel wide black stripes on either side of the display. This is a 16:10 display as opposed to the more common 16:9 wide screens.

I'm driving the display with a PNY Verto GeForce FX 5500-based AGP adapter with 128 Mb RAM using the KnoppMyth-provided nVidia drivers.

Anyone who knows how to decipher/write modelines have a clue? Or should I just switch to the card's S-Video output instead and be done with it?

Have you tried pressing 'W' to cycle through the different aspect ratios? Even though you've got the correct modleine Myth could be defaulting to a 4:3 picture as I guess you haven't edited out all the other available modelines.
If you've got the resolution listed it should be fine and an appropriate Modeline, it should work.
Perhaps I'm stating the obvious, but sometimes it is the easiest thing.
But I'm no expert (yet).
