Are you using LIRC or the kernel module? It is by far easier to remap keys with LIRC than the kernel module.

I'm using an ATI Remote Wonder on R5B7, and the default install had it set up using lirc. I've re-mapped some keys by editing /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc (after making a backup of that file, or course). You can get an idea of what lirc calls each button by taking a look at /etc/lirc/lircd.conf.

(edited for clarity)

You can equate [i]by far easier[/] to a pain, as you have to modify the source for the module and recompile the module. Not a easy task for the faint of heart. You'll also find you'll need to do this as I release newer versions with newer kernels. Backup and auto upgrade will retain your lircrc.
