I just did a clean autoinstall with R5B7 and installed everything relatively smoothly (remote still doesn't work, nor does TV out). Rather than hopping back and forth bewteen this computer and the Knoppmyth computer for forum instructions and troubleshooting, I decided to install Firefox on Knoppmyth. This is why I typed:

apt-get update
apt-get install firefox

While I was at it, I knew I also wanted to use Xine with Mythtv, so I thought I'd update that, too:

apt-get install xine-ui (tells me I need libreadline5 first)
apt-get install libreadline5 (which tells me I need readline-common)
apt-get install readline-common (finally installs)

I wait for readline-common to finish installing, and then I try libreadline5 again, but now it's already installed and up to date apparently. So I "apt-get install xine-ui" which works fine. Installs successfully.

However, now mythtv has somehow disappeared. The commands "mythbackend" "mythfrontend" and "myth-setup" all return the message "command not found." Mythtv must still be on my system, but I'm pretty new to linux (been using Ubuntu as primary OS for only a month or so) and am not sure how to get mythtv back again.

Your help and simple-to-follow directions are greatly appreciated.

A recent version of xine already comes standard. The browser install and all it's dependencies is probably what roached your box (BTW - Myth already includes a browser too), and yes I do think you roached it big time.

Time for a do over of the KnoppMyth Install.

Nope, doing the following

Quote:
apt-get install xine-ui (tells me I need libreadline5 first)
apt-get install libreadline5 (which tells me I need readline-common)
apt-get install readline-common (finally installs)

Will (for some reason) uninstall everything myth (mythfrontend, mythbackend, etc etc) and totally destroyed my Myth Box!

What ever you do, dont try to upgrade Xine via apt-get!!!

This is why the R5B7 upgrade notes say:
Quote:
Be very careful about doing apt-get install to add extra packages. The dependency cascades are kind of bad at the moment and you could roach your system.
This one is a bit odd but the advice stands. Don't use apt-get in R5B7 unless you're ready to reinstall if necessary.

I haven't found *anything* I can install with apt-get on R5B7 without having mythtv uninstalled...

There's too many broken or unresolved dependencies that basically will cause *any* apt-get install action to remove some 20 files, including mythplugins, libmyth, xfree86-common and a few other packages that are just as unimportant for a mythtv system...

Well I've done the following without issue (drivers for TI ACX111 802.11g wifi card):
Code:
# apt-get update
# apt-get install acx100-source wireless-tools

So it can't be completely broken.

G'day Tjc

What is the browser that runs and how do I start it ?

I tried to apt-get firefox and hosed my system ( r5b7), apt-get seems to not be very useable.

What does that have to do with this thread?

It's what started this thread! All the apt-get discussion is actually the off-topic bit!

He - like the OP - wanted to browse the Internet with Firefox and tried installing with apt-get, which hosed his mythtv installation....

J***s! Never heard of politeness, social skills and friendliness, have we? Or is it just that you cannot bear the fact that you OOPSed, and someone else pointed it out? Especially that someone else being a newbie on the forum...

Well, don't you worry, I'm outta here!

Macman,
I believe the browser tjc mentioned is the MythBrowser, which from memory is under the Info... menu.
