I looked up this bit
Quote:
Apr 12 01:14:22 mythtv kernel: tuner 1-0061: tuner type not set
Apr 12 01:14:22 mythtv kernel: tuner 1-0061: tuner type not set

on the ivtv mailing list and noted that message was caused by having a tveeprom.ko and tuner.ko that don't recognize the card. After a little more digging I found that the there were TWO places tuner.ko and tveeprom.ko were installed:

/lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video (original)
and /lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/ivtv (4.4 modules)

I had a similar problem when installing the 4.2 drivers on R5A22.

I updated the wiki page with this "forth" bulleted step:

* The driver installs a new tuner.ko and tveeprom.ko in /lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/ivtv. Rename the original versions to avoid conflict:

cd /lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/video
mv tveeprom.ko tveeprom.ko.orig
mv tuner.ko tuner.ko.orig

Now my ivtv tunner line reads:
Code:
Apr 20 17:36:52 mythtv kernel: tuner: type set to 68 (Samsung TCPN 2121P30A) by ivtv i2c driver #1

and I get color channels I can actually change. I'm runnig a pcHDTV as /dev/video and the pvr500 as /dev/video1 and /dev/video2. the new tveeprom seems to be fine for HDTV as well.

Excellent news.

I thought that "multiple copies of the modules" problem was licked...

After more research and more digging I think I've got something that works. I'm at work so I can't give it the full test, but I have finally recorded a clip of Comedy Central (previously static).

It turns out that despite compiling the new ivtv drivers (0.4.4) the system was defaulting to the kernel tuner and tveeprom. I had preiviously tried the "alias tuner tuner-ivtv" in the /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv file, but had gotten errors (Failed to load module tveeprom).
So I went into '/lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/ivtv' and renamed the files:
mv tuner.ko tuner-ivtv.ko
mv tveeprom.ko tveeprom-ivtv.ko
mv tda9887.ko tda9887-ivtv.ko

Then re-added the aliases previously mentioned in /etc/mythtv/modules/ivtv
alias tuner tuner-ivtv
alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias tda9887 tda9887-ivtv
And removed any/all lines specifying a tuner (eg. options ivtv tuner=50,50)

shutdown -r now and my dmesg ivtv snippet now looks like:
Code:

It recognizes the tuner and I'm not getting any i2c errors! Awesome. Now to test. (From work)
Code:
ivtv-tune -c 60 /dev/video0  #Set channel to Comedy Central
cat /dev/video0 > temp.mpg &  #Begin recording in background
ivtv-tune -c 59 /dev/video0  #Try another 'static' channel
ivtv-tune -c 5 /dev/video0  #Test with a known good channel
kill <pid>

Scp'd it back to my work pc and I've got good video from channels 60,59 and 5. Sounds like I'm good!

Hope this can help someone out there.

This is interesting. I am having similar issues with a PVR500 and R5B7, but when I checked

/lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/video

The specified files, tveeprom.ko and tuner.ko were not there.

I did, however, find copies in

/lib/modules/2.6.1 5-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video

I renamed these files as described above, but my problem persists.

I am also noticing unusual output form mythfilldatabase.

Code:
===============================================================
Attempting to contact the master backend for rescheduling.
If the master is not running, rescheduling will happen when
the master backend is restarted.

I am running with both a PVR350 and a PVR500 and ran snapperdragon's script to enable the TV out on the PVR350 AFTER I upgraded IVTV to 0.4.4 I notice the the script set my IVTV version back to 0.4.3. I think that something got screwed up in that process and I have incompatable driver files in various places. I will keep pounding on this and post any updates as I make progress.

Doing a google on "tuner type not set samsung" brought up this.

You are right! I put the right path on the wiki site, and the wrong path in my post. It IS /lib/modules/2.6.1 5-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video. Curse my poor proofreading!

I should also note that I did this off of a fresh autoupgrade of R5B7. You might want to try that to make sure you have the tuner stuff working before appying any other scripts.

Alternatively, if the 350 script is changing your version of ivtv, you m ight try running "make install" from the 4.4 directory again to re-apply the drivers.

good luck!

SUCCESS! My box is now working. Here is what I did.

I ran the PVR350 setup script, then followed the directions in the wiki to upgrade to ivtv0.4.4

http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CompileIvtv

EXCEPT that while renaming the old kernal modules, I also renamed the following file

/lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video/tda9887.ko
to

/lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video/tda9887.ko.old

Then contiuned with the rest of the instrustions.

Now everyhting seems to be working.

I'm not sure that mythfilldatabase is doing the right thing, but I will know soon enough.

Glad to hear it! I added tda9887.ko to the wiki instructions. I didn't seem to need it, but if it is installed it makes sence we should use it.

Just a possible gotcha, if memory serves the HDTV cards from pcHDTV (HD2000, HD3000, ...) and others running in DVB mode may depend on the other version of the tuner modules. You should probably only do this if you're having a problem with your PVR card.

I have read that. For what it's worth, I have a pcHDTV HD3000 in my machine also, and it seems to be working fine. In fact it is working better than before, but that may just be better antenna placement.
