cat /proc/cpuinfo
If it only shows details for one processor, disabling SMP will not hurt (it may actually improve performance slightly because some locking code required for the multiple cpu case may still be called even though it is not needed). If you do this on a hyperthreading P4 box, you will see details for two processors and disabling SMP would lower performance.
