So, I sat down at my WinXP system, which happened to have an SSH session open to my backend machine. I see the following in my putty screen:

Code:
Message from syslogd@backend at Fri Apr 28 21:37:08 2006 ...
backend kernel: flags:0x00000008 mapping:00000000 mapcount:-889192448 count:0

Message from syslogd@backend at Fri Apr 28 21:37:08 2006 ...
backend kernel: Backtrace:

Message from syslogd@backend at Fri Apr 28 21:37:08 2006 ...
backend kernel: Trying to fix it up, but a reboot is needed

The session is toast, I can't ctrl-c, I can't type, it's totally locked up. I turn on the TV to see if I can get any response from the backend itself, and it seems to be totally frozen. Back to the Windows PC, I attempt to ping the IP for the backend and get no response. Totally locked up, completely frozen. So I reboot.

Anybody have any idea what this is? What additional info can I provide that will may be relevant to this situation?

every line in /var/log/messages has a time stamp
post the last few lines from before the crash. You can page through it with the "less" command.
(hit "q" to exit less)

The next line after 21:36:47 is my restart. Anything in here that makes any sense?

yes. It looks like it might be SMP related.

Code:
Apr 28 21:36:47 backend kernel: c016dd60
Apr 28 21:36:47 backend kernel: PREEMPT SMP

Try to recompile your kernel without SMP support.

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9218

Other things that come to mind are that it might be heat related.

Make sure that your CPU fan has not died. You can also try memtest86 to
see if your memory has gone flakey..

Thanks for the pointers, SMP is multi-processor support, right? I don't have a dual core, so pulling that out wouldn't even hurt my performance at all.

Heat shouldn't be an issue, as this processor was being used in a warmer environment previous to my reinstall, but the stick of ram I"m using is different than what was in here earlier.

If I see the same again I'll likely swap in another stick or run a memtest.

Thanks again for the thoughts.

Yep - it ismulti-processor support.

It looks like SMP may have caused the crash. The register dump
and the stack trace is about equal to the blue screen of death in windows.

If it only happens once blue moon it may not be worth your trouble to fix.. unless
it blows up and causes your wife to miss oprah ;)

She's not so much into Oprah, but there are plenty of other shows in the Queue that are important to catch.

I'll see what the coming days bring and take things from there.
