Is that it??? Everyone out of ideas??? :(

I havent tried video cds yet. I'll see how far I get with them.

I think I may try to reinstall xine. I'll follow the guide, hopefully it will be the same on this version than on the wiki...

Well, VCD's work. It's just DVDs.
I'll have a go with apt-get update for xine from the wiki...

sorry, all I could recommend is reinstalling "pineapple" given that the errors you saw were pineapple-related. But I would 100% defer to tjc or xsecrets if they could follow up here.

Well, I'll try again with pinapple.
Though I may just re-do the auto-upgrade instead of playing around with things I don't really understand too well.
I looked at the xine stuff on the website... and decided perhaps that wasn't the exact cause. their trouble shooting section only suggests what tjc and xsecrets already had come up with (give or take).
So, I'm thinking ... start again.
btw Ceenvee... did you sort you dvd probs out? Did a reinstall of pinapple sort it out?

Since it's been a while since I've tested DVD playback, I grabbed a DVD, dropped it in the drive and fired up xine from the menu. Everything worked flawlessly. My settings look like this:
Code:
DVDDeviceLocation    /dev/dvd
DVDPlayerCommand    xine -pfhq --auto-scan dvd

My device setup and permissions looks like this:
Code:
root@black2:/var/log# ls -al /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom /dev/hdc
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom     8 Apr  9 13:30 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdc
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root cdrom     8 Apr  9 13:30 /dev/dvd -> /dev/hdc
brw-rw----  1 root cdrom 22, 0 May  7  2004 /dev/hdc
root@black2:/var/log# grep cdrom /etc/group
cdrom:*:24:mythtv

Let's see if there's anything else... I've got a "dvdinput" table with 8 rows. I'm running MythTV 0.19-fixes. ... That's really about it...

A shot in the dark from a new member here (and relatively new to linux)

Is it possible that pineapple doesn't have authority to access the DVD drive (run as another user?).. Not familiar with pineapple. I didn't install it.

Looking at the error message I'ld say pineapple acts as a "filter" by reading the dvd, then passes the data to xine. It can't get the information, so it can't pass the information. I'ld be more inclined to think the problem is with pineapple.

Pineapple probably isn't used with VCD's, hence them working.

Thanks for that, Wizzard~Of~Ozz. I had actually got as far as that. I had fiddles with xine a bit and it obviously worked beyond just playing .avi files: by taking out the --NoSplash switch and was able to fiddle with the settings etc. so I had narrowed it down to a pineapple problem.
I have now reinstalled Myth B7 and now I have to reinstall 'pineapple' again...
hopefully this time it will work...

Are you trying to play commercial DVDs? If so, have you installed decryption software? You will have to search the web for more information since I do not think Cesman wants anymore said in this forum.

Actually I'm no longer sure it's the same problem.

While xine correctly tried to access /dev/dvd, that was correctly linked to /dev/hdc, pineapple was trying to access /dev/cdrom1 which did not exist (I had /dev/cdrom linked to hdc but that was all).
I linked /dev/cdrom1 to /dev/hdc and it started working. It would probably make a mess should I add a new drive, but for now it works.

I don't know the reason for this, but it maybe the fact that I used to have a second drive I removed a few months ago and for some reason Ogle (which I was using at the time) was not affected but Xine is (after an auto update so other conditions might also have changed).

I had the same problem.

I think it may be an encryption issue because some DVD's work (which I suspect to be region-free and unencrypted), while others do not
