Hello,

I am going on vacation tomorrow, and I wanted to clear some space "temporarily" on my /myth hard disk to handle the duration where I will not be regularly deleting watched shows. Do you have any suggestions on how to do this easily and seamlessly?

This is my idea so far:

I have an external USB hard disk with emtpy space connected to my Windows XP computer. Using SAMBA, I can connect to the KnoppMyth box and pull off .NUV files from the /myth/tv directory. I would not touch the MySQL database at all, so later on I can simply copy those .NUV files back to the /myth/tv directory and no one is the wiser.

Specifically, I have been recording all of the episodes of the TV show "24." Since I don't plan to watch them anytime soon, I wanted to move those specific .NUV files over to the external hard disk. Since they were recorded at varying random times, there is no way to identify which files .NUV files to move, unless I tediously go through and pick through the date/time/filenames.

As an idea, I wanted to perform the "drag-and-drop" copy command with the /myth/pretty links. I believe that would accurately copy the .NUV files to my external hard disk, but then all the filenames would be "pretty" filenames, not #####.NUV filenames. That means when I copy the files back to the /myth/tv directory later, they won't match what the database is expecting.

What do you think I should do? Thanks!

Well, if you are going to move them back, why not simply start up samba on the backend, connect to the Myth box and grab XZY number of video from \\mythbox\tv?

Thanks for the response. I think you and I are having the same thought here:

1. Start SAMBA on the backend
2. Move the .NUV files from /myth/tv through the network to the external hard disk that is connected to the Windows XP computer.
3. Later on, move them back.

That certainly works. However, if I wanted to identify the specific .NUV files that are recordings of "24", how do I do that (easily)?

I thought that moving the "pretty" links would be easy (since the name "24" is right there), but I think the different filename would mess up the database expectations when I move them back.

My point is, what does it matter which videos you move as long as you are going to move them back?

Oh, great question. I am going to watch some of the old movies over MythStreamTV. That is why I did not want to indiscriminantly move ALL of the files. Instead, I wanted to seletively move a chunk of files that I definitely know I will not be accessing--i.e. the "24" episodes.
